...and what an experience it was. Encouraged by a friend to buy ANY Aphex Twin album I naturally selected his latest, unaware of the musc style he played (I only knew it'd be electronica) I went and got it, went to work, put the cd in the computer and had the scariest, weirdest experience of my life!!!
By the 3rd track I had to turn it off, but I was so excited to hear the whole thing, so after work I went to get some tequila (by the way, I'm mexican, so it was the obvious) and played the album TWICE. I had not felt anything like that since I was 14 and had just finished listening to The Cure's Pornography album. Scared, saddened, hyper, scared again...
Not for everyone though and once I got his other albums I can see why some people could not appreciate it, but some tracks are so disgusting and cruel to the ear that they become beautiful after 30 seconds.
like all aphex twin cd's when you hear that it is comeing out you expect something.... and then you hear it and go....what the f*ck! this is one of those cd's. you won't like it at first...but you will get used to it and like all his other cd's learn to love it in it's own unique way... i like how he doesn't do the same dam thing every album.... if he did then he would be like everyone else... if you get this cd for one reason......get it for the son vordsobin...or how ever you spell it.... i love that song and it is a good example that aphex twin not only puts together crazy songs...but can write a melody and make a beautiful peiice of music
This is quite an original album and it gets better everytime you listen to it. I find the whole album to be one long continuous song. After listening to Drukgs, I'm definitely going to listen to more of Mr. Jame's albums.
Richard is at it again, this time with a new approach. Now he has sprinkled bits of piano and classical melodies between his usual heart-racing fast ambient-techno songs. It is basically a combo of all his old stuff, but then again, his old stuff was sick!!! Hot tracks: Disc 1- 2,8,10 Disc 2- 1,5,9,12 Enjoy, and make sure the bass is pumped!
I admit, this album definately doesn't live up to other aphex twim albums, but it does have some surprises. There are a few tracks that just have piano, and they are completely different from anything ever produced by James. I think that James is always throwing surpirses into every album. He is exploring a new path, and I think he is taking the right step forward. If he can only combine the classical sounds with his modern antics, I think he would have a fantastic album. This cd however just gives you a taste of different music forms; some classic, some harsh, some ambient, and are defined as such in every track. I think combining those music types may enhance the listening experience as does his other albums.
Listening to this album is like listening to to all the previous albums that Aphex from Selected Ambient Work 85-92 to Richard D. James album and Window Licker EP at the same time. It goes from a sinfull piano melodie to hardcore drum and bass. Is it bad or good this way ? Well, the album might sound a little bit disturbing for the brain, but that's why we like Aphex Twin!
First Time Ive Ever Heared This Guy And Its So
yes, the phenomenal wonder does it again.
working with music, i am in awe.
this album IS.
that is all.
All this other stuff released this year IMO doesnt even come close to the
genius that is consisted on RDJ"s DruKQS.
Time will prove the naysayers wrong, trust me..
The album reeks of emotion and sheer beauty unlike anything else released
this year.
So what if itsn't all that innovative, its still leaps better then the rest
IMO..
Reasons of dissapointment might be that the expectations and the waiting
length for the release might have been too much and too long..
Whoopdie doo...
A lot of the so-called innovative stuff released this year lack total soul
IMO, and in terms of drawing blood from a machine RDJ is the bloody king...
Drukqs is innovative enough to even be there with the rest of them...added
to that this album has far more variations then anything else released as of
late...
If ya think ya got him figured out, he might be fooling you now, since he
could quite easily come up with anything so advanced out of nowhere, who
knows...
This seems like a purging all the personalities of RDJ kind of an album,
just to get ready to go on to the next phase, who knows.
But nonetheless, I DO think this is an album that is unparalelled in terms
of sheer enjoyability and emotion compared to anything else.
Sorry, But I found Confield to be a pile of Crap and I like Autechre...
A year from now...I guarantee you that DRukqs will already be considered a
Classic albeit a little controversial because of its seemingly incohesive
nature ( who cares?)...
Nah, Album of the year by far.....IMO....
Peace
Tis was by far some of his worst work ever. I can see y this album got such bad reviews. window licker, come to daddy, and power pill pacman. now those are good aphex twin songs.. this is just crap. Name one song that compares to the songs listed above.. plz
"Once upon a time there were three bears, mummy bear, daddy bear... mummy bear... mummmmy beeeeaaaaaarrrrrrrrr, mummy b-b-bear" <cue spastic breakbeat>
Yup, it's Aphex Twin alright, make no mistake about it, and this time he's taking no prisoners. Richard D. James has pulled out all the stops and created some of the most psychotic techno tracks you are ever likely to hear. Believe me when I tell you that the breakbeats deployed on these tracks are *INTENSE*, yet they constantly shift to different drum patterns in a manner that is utterly flawless. Stop paying attention for a second and you'll miss something.
Is there anything new about R.D. James' sound here? Well, a big deal appears to have been made about the piano pieces, and rightly so. At times they sound like classical music, and despite the fact that they've been sequenced, they sound as though they're being played live.
Musically, the ablum is quite varied, too. "Gwely Mernans" could have been lifted from "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2" and "Bbydhyonchord" wouldn't sound out of place on "I Care Because You Do".
One last word: I'm glad Richard D. James hasn't succumbed to the IDM trend of making music that, while technically proficient, is really nothing but pretentious wank (if you've heard Autechre's or Squarepusher's latest "efforts" then you'll know what I mean). This is intelligent techno as it was meant to sound - very well constructed, yet extremely musical.
A must buy for anyone who is into electronic music.
Those fukqs at Rolling Stone don't have a clue... Drukqs is great! Richard shows a wide range of styles on this outing. There are probably more prepared piano pieces than anything else, which came as a bit of a surprise. Richard strikes a wonderful balance between creatively kinetic drum and bass, and achingly beautiful ambience. Another work of genius!
Aphex Twin is back, and in my opinion better thatn ever. This complex album takes us deep into the mind of the original mad scientist of techno, Richard D. James. IDM or intelligent dance music, has not always been widely excepted by the general public, but RDJ has been the pioneer of this unique genre of music.
In this album he takes drum and bass frame work and carefully molds it into a vast landscape of tweeked out bits of sound and samples. In between the incredible IDM tracks, he carefully laces this album with his other talent, pure soft core ambient works. Numerous paino solos, as well as strange ambient noises periodically appear throughout the tracks, spreading out the general atmosphere of the album itself. I'm really impressed with the progression that RDJ has shown, and I am glad that he decided to make another album.
Many reviewers have been quick to point out that Richard D. James' seemingly flippant attitude towards both his fans and his music has, ironically, only increased the ardor with which many fans worship him. This makes me somewhat wary of heaping praise on an album which the reviewers above have suggested indicates little growth as an artist, some even to the point of suggesting that many tracks are "jokes." Unfortunately for myself, after hearing this album, I am thoroughly convinced that Mr. James is by far the most brilliant and innovative musician in the field of instrumental music to come along in a long while. Perhaps the jocular demeanor and flippant air can be explained by the heartbreaking tenderness found on many of the softer piano pieces on this work. Perhaps the air of bravado and disinterest belies a more serious and fragile love of all things beautiful, whether it be in the form of twisted jungle/acid beats or haunting ambient strains.
Perhaps the most innovative aspect of this album, one which may not be apparent on first listen, in the melding of the various forms of music Aphex Twin so deftly employs. Many tracks find strains of complex and gorgeous melodies buried deep, or at times hovering over, a wild fray of electronic beat destruction. In this way, Aphex Twin's sound has continued to evolve, combining the best elements of his various palatte into a vibrant soundscape bursting with a complex array of sonic beauty. Many of the tracks that don't fit into this catagory, one's that some might call "throw-aways" still fulfill a necessary role in this album. By providing mantra-like breaks between the fury of the other sections of this album, these moments of relative calm meditation bring back a center, also informing a sense of evolving ritualism to the album. The album tends to follow a cyclical pattern of repetition, even the songs themselves tending to repeat sections, making the whole greater than the sum of its parts.
I'm certain there will be those who disagree with this review, and some that will find it downright laughable. It's quite possible that AFX is reading this right know and laughing his brilliant british a** off at the gushing flow of superlatives and praise, but hey, who can really hate a guy who puts a ansaphone message of his parents singing him a happy 28th birthday.
Those of us that were expecting Aphex Twin, the alter-ego of techno-poineer Richard D. James to finally do a career defining album will be disapointed with Drukqs. There are some great songs on this two disc set, most of them piano pieces such as Avril 14th and Jynweythek Ylow, which are free of the scrambled sounds of many of the other tracks. While the rumor that most the album are random unpublished songs that were eating up space on James's hard drive is most likely false, it says something about the quality of most of the songs on this album. This album doesn't amount to much of anything in the end, which is a shame, since everything after the Richard D. James album seemed to be getting better and better. From the Come to Daddy EP to the Windowlicker single, to the recently released "Two Remixes by afx", Aphex Twin had constantly improved and refined his sound, but seems to have forgotten any lessons learned while on a two year hiatus.
Aphex Twin all the way, if only he could come Brisbane, Australia one day. Drukqs is one of those albums that has to grow on ya. There is so much in each song as always with RDJ you can't listen to each song once and that's it, it's one of those albums. For sure check this one out
Beyond Good Electronica (If he stays at just that) album. Uses a WIDE varity of beats and just blows you away. If this is your type of music (and you wouldnt be searching it if it wasn't) and Aphex Twin is on your list, make it a must get for 2001!
I downloaded it and its awesome very creepy stuff lawlz, I especially like how all the song titles are like all crazy and stuff
