    Pros: Beautiful Voice

    Cons: Songs 1-6

I dont have much to say on Tamyra's new CD, except we waited too long......for "half & half". I mean, you can hear the first 6 songs in any church or middle school talent show, anywhere. I would say that "Don't Stop (track 7)&...quot; is the when it starts getting good, it's an up beat party tune. The first 6 songs sound like a karaoke version of Billy Holiday......gone wrong! . Song 8, "You've Only Got 1" is when the CD gets really deep, in the fact that you learn that you have to love yourself and learn lessons to be a better person. Faces (track 9) is really deep, she explains the many faces that we all have to put on, in order to live our life, but which face would her lover use to love her or not..? "Like a child" (track 10) is really a decent, wholesome song. She accepts her feelings and doesn't give into any taboo of society, such as pressure or hurt, however conquers them and wants her lover to trust her and love her, but remain true to himself and accept his thoughts and not to sugar coat anything and also to turn to her for any comfort needed. Track 11, Yesterday/Today slips into mediocrity. Basically feeling sorry for herself, but wants to learn from stronger people, typical, for us to not accept our own consequences, but want oher people to bail us out, I suppose it is an "homage" song at best, but to whom? Track 12 is very cool. It takes me back to the days of starting a BBQ, listening to music, and chillin', after a hard week's honest work. It is cool, calm and soulful, going back to the days of just watching cartoons on Saturday, to making love to ol' school jams and firing up the grill in the afternoon, a litte reminiscent of Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince's "Summertime", but with a little 'Ms. Thang' flair. Track 13 is a beautiful song. How many times have we put our all into something, only to have a critic piss all over it? (Sort of what I am doing now, lol) She says that God will bless any heartfelt effort and that someday one will shine, no matter how "terrible" they may appear to be. She is saying to never give up, look to God for guidance and he will give you back that innocence you have lost as a child, to make you give love to everyone through your "gifted" craft. In essence, giving peace and prosperity to others, from your dreams. Overall, this is a decent, wholesome CD that young women can definitly look to for guidance and understanding and men can learn a thing or two about respect, as long as we all look to each other for support. If you skip past the 1st 6 tracks, you will have a record to cherish for years to come. Perhaps, track 1-6 should be released on a "bonus" CD, just kidding.... Read more Less

    Pros: Great voice

    Cons: NONE

I think that Tamyra will be one of the best singers in my generation. I think that she could out sing many of the vocalist out today and she has a real graceful quality about herself. She doesn't flash all of her skin she has a lot of class and... that is what i like about her. SHe will do great. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The wink that Simon Cowell gave Tamyra Gray when she had to leave the first season of American Idol (prematurely, many think) clearly meant quite a bit. Even though Gray didn't win or even come in second place, she now seems to have the most interesting and diverse career of any of the American Idol contestants. Despite some label problems early on, Gray remained prominent while she made her debut album by acting on shows such as Tru Calling and Boston Public and, of course, appearing on the third season of American Idol. And, with Justin Guarini's selftitled debut album a nonstarter, the forces behind the show redoubled their support behind Gray, not only featuring her on the show but also entrusting her to write "I Believe," the song that the winner of the series' third season recorded as her first single. Gray also wrote or cowrote all of the songs but one on The Dreamer, an album that reveals Gray as more than the elegant contestant who turned out flawless, seemingly effortless per...formances week after week until illness brought on by American Idol's grueling schedule claimed her voice. The American Idol contestants that have had the most success in their recording careers are the ones with the most distinctive personalities: spunky, downtoearth Kelly Clarkson and sweet, bigvoiced Clay Aiken. Their albums reflected these images, but The Dreamer's mix of oldschool soul, funk and singersongwriter pop acknowledges the ambitious Gray from the show and, in its best moments, suggests a fun, funky side that wasn't always evident on American Idol. Essentially, The Dreamer is the first American Idol neosoul album, complete with horn and stringladen arrangments and backintheday references, the most charming of which is "Good Ol' Days", a shoutout to 1985 where Gray sings "Fat Albert and Prince were my two favorite things." The Dreamer works best in this upbeat, funky mode, exemplified by its first two tracks, "Star" (which sounds more soulful and immediate here than it did on American Idol and the fun, nostalgic "The Only Thing." The album's ballads, however, are less consistent. Too many of them tend to be meandering and formless, and seemingly constructed of nothing but vocal vamps. Gray's voice is lovely and powerful enough to carry off songs like "Legend" and "Raindrops Will Fall" (which also sounds better than it did on TV), but "Like a Child" which, despite its interesting production, isn't much of a song and the pretty but rambling "Yesterday/Today" tend to make the album slump. These songs tend to raise the issue of just how good a songwriter Gray actually is; her voice is so strong that she can make even the clunkiest song, like "God Bless the Dreamer" (which, to be fair, Gray didn't write), sound better than it actually is. Still, the album has enough winning moments, like the sweet, oldschool love song "17"; the sassy kissoff "Ha Ha"; and the discofunk of "Don't Stop (Keep it Coming)" to overcome its slumps and show that Gray does have talent as a songwriter that should be nurtured by working with stronger collaborators on her next album. Even though The Dreamer doesn't quite deliver on all of its ambitions, it's still a strong debut and one of the better ones that the American Idol phenomenon has produced. - Heather Phares, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Tamyra Gray

Praised as much for her wide vocal range and passionate delivery as she was for her elegant style, Tamyra Gray was seen by many as the singer who, in a perfect world, should have won the first edition of American Idol. When Gray didn't get enough votes to stay on the show and less talented contestants like Nikki McKibbin did, Gray's dismissal sparked responses ranging f... Read more
