  • Overall:

Numan's band breaks out its own sound

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 22, 2002

Despite the misleading cover of the re-release (Even Yahoo fell for it...Numan only appears on one song, "Love Needs No Disguise"), this album is an excellent addition to any Numan collection. The Dramatis Project is Numan's backup band (aka Tubeway... Army) sans Numan at the helm. Their sound is suprisingly faithful and oftentimes (in my opinion) fresher than Numan's usual sound. Originally released in 1981 and entitled "For Future Reference," this album closely reflects the Numan/Tubeway Army sound of the time, but was done so well that it could almost pass as a new release today with a retro feel. The tracks "Oh! 2525" and "I Only Find Rewind" are prime tracks, which are almost indistinguishable from the style of Numan's more rock-based songs of the time. Don't pass this one up, because it probably won't be circulating for long. Read more Less

  • All Music Guide

When Gary Numan made his dramatic exit from touring in 1981, his backing band Dramatis decided to continue as a quartet. This lone album, originally titled For Future Reference, is the result, remembered today for the one song ("Love Needs No Disguise" a British top 40 hit) to which Numan added his robotic vocals. It's hardly surprising that the band members -- keyboardist/violist Chris Payne; guitarist Rrussell Bell; keyboardist Denis Haines and drummer Cedric Sharpley -- drafted their boss, then at the height of his fame, for some help, or that his contribution overshadows the rest of For Future Reference. But it is a little curious that a group which had spent so long playing Numan material should have such trouble replicating it. The familiar touches are all there, including loads of analog synths and sci-fi subject matter, and Bell even manages a passable android impersonation on songs like "Oh 2025". The mood runs counter to expectations, however, undermined by chipper disco groo...ves, friendly pop hooks and the occasional bit of prog-rock wankery. Dramatis had evidently decided to forge its own sound, yet for Numan fans (who were, after all, the primary audience), that decision must have been confusing at best. Speaking of confusion, the album was finally reissued in 2000 -- but as The Dramatis Project, under the moniker of Numan's first band, Tubeway Army. - Dan LeRoy, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Gary Numan

One of the founding fathers of synth pop, Gary Numan's influence extends far beyond his lone American hit, "Cars," which still stands as one of the defining new wave singles. That seminal track helped usher in the synth pop era on both sides of the Atlantic, especially his native U.K., where he was a genuine pop star and consistent hitmaker during the early '80s. Even a... Read more
