Pros: 35 Eps. for $30
Cons: New Sound and Remastering is a copout
As a HUGE Dragonball Z fan I was ecstatic to hear that Funimation was FINALLY producing uncut boxsets of the entire DBZ series and was doubly happy to hear that they were redoing the all the original dialogue with all new dialogue. The original dialogue largely did not make any sense and left a lot of plot holes open. The expectation of remastered, widescreen HD picture was also exciting. Sadly, although the price is right at around $30, they really missed the mark at all of those expectation for the 2nd season boxset.
First off, when a company remasters a film, one would expect to see more of the picture than originally seen with better picture clarity. Although the picture looks better than it ever has, their attempt at making DBZ "widescreen" is an utter cop out. All they did was crop the original film to fit in a widescreen display, meaning ultimately one doesn't the see the original top and bottom of the film. This results in a lot of cut off pictures that just look goofy in a lot of instances.
Secondly, the new dialogue and music. The first boxset performed wonderfully in my opinion. The new dialogue made much more sense and the music was great. Now as for the 2nd season, not so much. Most episodes up until episode 66, were fine. They used all new dialogue and music which did the series justice, although I noticed in one episode where the background sound dropped out for about 15 minutes. Anyway, unfortunately when you get to episode 67 the greatness of this boxset comes crashing down. Due to absolute laziness in my opinion, they started recycling about half of the original dialogue and instead of the new music which I was in a swoon over in episode 66 was replaced with the original music they used when the picked up the series about 7-8 years ago. There literally is an utter shift in the atmosphere in the show as soon as you get to episode 67. I was not expecting about half of the characters voices and all of the music to sound COMPLETELY different. This action doesn't make any sense at all because if they were going to do this they should have started that on episode 66 where they picked up the series 7-8 years ago. The new material worked great in episode 66 why start recycling the old stuff in 67. I don't understand it all and haven't seen ANY explanation of that so far.
Overall, great price for so many episodes but for Dragonball Z purists such as myself it was a huge let down. ...
