Dr. George Butler has been a controversial figure throughout his career. While working at Blue Note in the 1970s, he led the fabled label towards commercialism and, although there were major commercial successes with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Noel Pointer, Ronnie Laws and others, the music has since dated badly and the end result was the temporary end of Blue Note.
