I feel that this album is slightly underrated, although this is not as good as badmotorfinger, or superunknown but its probbly at the #3 spot on my list under soundgarden, especially with songs like "pretty noose", "rhinosaur", "dusty", "blow up the outside world", "burden in my hand", "tighter&tighter&quo
t;, "no attention", "switch opens", and showing their remmaining heavyness with "ty cobb" and mellowness with "zero chance".I recomend this cd for anyone who enjoys "Grunge" music.
Classic new SG, baby. No strings attached, just pure, beautiful Pacific northwest bred music from the band that defines that elusive word we all came to love...grunge.
BEST SONG? - its hard, however...I measure it by the chill factor. You know your listening to a new album and you hear a song that you immediatley (regardless if you haven't heard the rest of the cd) go back and play it again? Goose bumps all over...well "Zero Chance, 6 years later still does that to me.
I luv this album. And I think if Soundgarden would continue making great albums, they could make another superunknown or even better. But still I also think was good for Chirs Cornell to make ''Euphoria Morning'' cuz is such an inspiring album, a work of art and master-piece of perfection...
What a great album!Genious tracks!Well, not as good as "Superunknown" but better than most albums.
Anyone planning to buy a Soundgarden album shoud by this one becuase you will hear Soundgarden at their best. Nearly all the song on it are great, and you will listen to the record again and again.
What can I say, Soundgarden are simply in a league of their own. They are pure talent.
DOTUS is the underrated, yet brilliant follow-up to the epic Superunknown. It is more experimental with songs like Ty Cobb, Never The Machine Forever or An Unkind.
Must buy!
This isnt soundgardens best work. They have gone a bit more experimental with this one mixing punk and pop with thier sludgy grunge sound. Cornell has lost the intensity and emotion he had with previous albums, he almost sounds like hes bored. There are still some great songs such as petty noose, zero chance, burden in my hand and ty cobb. But the prodution is poor, making them sound too soft.
Superunknown and badmotorfinger are far superior.
When this album was issued, somebody said that Cornell and co. were not the same guys of Superunknown. Well, when Superunknown was issued (and it sure was a masterpiece), were the Soundgarden the same guys of Badmotorfinger? Critics make me laugh. I just listen to the music and make myself an opinion. This, man, is a GREAT album. Just push play and listen to "zero chance", "switch opens" or "overfloater" and you'll figure out how the band grew from the ortodossian grunge days. Smooth and precious vocal parts, experimentation in almost every song, musicians at their best. One special mention for Chris Cornell's vocal performance: simply superb. Buy this, if you still haven't got it.
Till the present day I couldn't figure out why those self-proclaimed "experts" of Rolling Stone or Alt. Press rated this album with only 3 stars.
If "DOTUS" would have been released before "Superunknown" I bet it would have gotten a much better rating. But this just proves that you should never trust the critics.
Oh yeah, I forgot, they couldn't do that because than they would have to admit that Soundgarden was a better band than those Nirvana
They couldn't believe that Cornell "outshined" Cobain.
Im my opinion this is the best soundgarden album ever. It has all the trademarks of past soundgarden works and still pushes forward in brilliant and creative directions, I was looking forward to their next album until.....
Soundgarden was one of a few bands(especially in 2day`s bleak rock landscape)that continually pushed itself in new and interesting directions without forgetting their bottom-heavy roots...definitely a good extension of Superunknown which itself was excellent....a sorely missed band.
So maybe this album didn't generate hits such as "spoon man" and "black hole sun" and didn't sell 5 million copies in US like Superunknown, but this is still as good, or maybe even better, as Superunknown and Badmotorfinger. The songs range from powerful and epic "burden in my hand", "rhinosaur" to fast punk swirls "never named", "ty cobb" and to more mellow songs like "zero change" and "blow up the outside world."
After their critically acclaimed album 'SuperUnknown' went on to sell 5 million records in the U.S. SoundGarden strikes back with a more punkish outing in 'Down on the Upside'. Though this album lacks the dark, brooding nature of the previous album, it explores some other elements of depression and repressed anger and so much better than Nirvana ever did in their entire (and short) carier. There is no 'BlackHole Sun' but, there is enough here to make you headbang all the way to jail. Check out songs like 'Ty Cobb' 'Pay no attention''Blow up the outside world' and 'pretty noose'. Great stuff from legends.
I like lots of music, but just sittin' here listening to this CD reminds me why I bought it - its just better than ANYTHING else!
Some would think that after their big break with Superunknown they would run out of fuel, but they pulled off a masterpiece. Listen to BOOT CAMP, which is my favorite song in the album.
GREAT ALBUM. 16 GOOD OR GREAT TRACKS. CORNELL NEEDS TO RE-FROM THIS BAND AND QUIT THE SOLO CRAP.
...............This was one of the best albums of
'96. On the downside, it was the last album by one of
the greatest bands that ever walked the earth. The
whole thing just gets me all choked
up.......................
.........
Any album that has Chris Cornell's voice is welcome in my CD library. This is the best I've heard Soundgarden do. As much as 'Pretty Noose' and 'Blow Up The Outside World' rock, it doesn't top the softer 'Zero Chance' and 'Dusty'. Rock solid from start to finish, this is justice to the Seattle scene hype.
better than what most people think, a good strong album to finish off with, more mellow than heavy grunge, 3 top songs come out pretty noose, blow up the outside world and burden in my hand,if it was someone elses album it would be really good but soundgarden fans you may have been expecting to much
It's too bad Soundgarden decided to call it quits because the evidence available in this album proves that these guys could have gone forever making albums this strong. Soundgarden was on the verge of becoming one of the greatest bands ever. The riffs explode off this album. Once you listen to Pretty Noose and Rhinosaur, the rest of the album flows naturally. They also do some experimenting, most notably on Applebite and the beginning of Ty Cobb. All in all Soundgarden doesn't disappoint. This proves, above all, Soundgarden had the talent and the strength to carry on for a long, long time.
