Pro Reviews: Double Portrait (1987) / In Double Edge "U.S. Choice"

  • All Music Guide

Influenced by other pattern music composers (Glass, Reich, Riley), Borden's music nevertheless has its own character made from rich layers of freewheeling solos over the patterns with some very lovely textures. The structure of the music is built on composer and performers' names and birthdates in an elevated soap opera structure. Performed by Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co., a well-known East Coast synthesizer group in the early 1970s (original members: David Borden, Linda Fisher, Steve Drews) which used many modern techniques in their pieces from chance procedures to pattern music and various forms of improvisation.
