[A]s bizarre and costly as the Barthelme's legal ordeal certainly was (past tense: All charges were dismissed...), this is no mere cautionary tale. It's a brutally candid, unflattering self-portrait of two successful middle-aged menÂ…who managed, somehow, to sail through their adulthood behaving like 'overage children.'...DOUBLE DOWN is...an unsentimental, even edgy meditation on the loss of one's parents and the often crazy-making trauma of being orphaned in midlife.
It...talks perceptively and sometimes brilliantly of life, death, family, hope and despair, and money as an expression of these things. It is extremely melancholy and very, very disturbing.
They relate both stories in a style so seamless that it's hard to tell you are reading a collaboration. The narrative voice varies form the first-person plural to the third person to the second person, and it's never jarring and almost always absorbing.
The whole book...is a wonderfully seductive performance--witty, self-aware, at once full of subtle feeling and implacably knowing--a triumph of style over temporary insanity....The Barthelme brothers turned stylish losing into an art. It cost them a small fortune, but at least they salvaged a stylish book from their disaster.
