Doo Wop fans all over the world owe a debt of gratitude to Rhino Records for three boxes of doo wop classics...beautifully mastered and packaged...

This latest box (number III) falls far short of the first two however.

The first two discs made up of "hits" and "should have been hits" are sort of up to standard (though I don't know if the Safaris' wimpy "Image Of A Girl" could be classified as doo wop).

Dion, Paul Simon, George Carlin, Leiber and Stoller and other celebrities picked the selections for disc three and for the most part, their "picks" are mediocre, possibly due to the fact that most of the really sensational material is contained in the first two Rhino sets.

Disc four, containing "neo" doo wop, is the worst of the bunch...another attempt at mass appeal and to make the package more attractive to younger buyers-- so instead of great stuff like "Fat Fat Fat Momeo" by the Chalets, we get Linda Ronstadt, the Beach Boys, and Boys II Men.

But enough carping.

With these three boxes, Rhino has done a great service to doo wop lovers around the globe.

Note: for Box number four, Rhino may want to let the fans who shelled out 70 bucks a pop for the first three sets have some say in the material for box four...the "celebrities" don't seem to be up to the task.
