Recorded in Pittsburgh on May 11 and May 12 of 1999, Doo Wop 50 Live is the soundtrack to the PBS special on the 50th anniversary of doo wop, featuring performances by Gene Chandler, the Del-Vikings, the Penguins, the Cadillacs, the Moonglows, the Skyliners, the Flamingos, the Jive Five, and other doo wop hitmakers. Most of the groups are fronted by their original lead singers, according to the liner notes, and they sound pretty good considering that four decades or so had passed since their commercial prime. The house band backs them competently, modernizing the arrangements with the sheen of nostalgia that you would expect from such an endeavor (and such a PBS broadcast).
