Philosophy of Karma, Angst, and Time Travel

I can't think of a single thing that would have improved this film. It has teen angst, karma, family dysfunction, peer pressure, and a philosophy that makes you think long after the credits have rolled.
Donnie Darko is a teenager with mental health issues and a giant rabbit dream stalker. At first the rabbit seems like a Pooka รก la the giant invisible rabbit in "Harvey" (1950, starring Jimmy Stewart). The rabbit tells Donnie that the world will end in 28 days, and Donnie wakes up on a golf course. He goes home only to find that a jet engine from an unidentified plane has crashed into his house and but for the rabbit's calling him outside, he would have died.
Over the next 28 days, Donnie Darko's giant invisible rabbit convinces him to commit crimes, each more horrible than the last. Donnie is frantic to discover metaphysical truths before the world must end, but he can't figure out why he is compelled to obey the rabbit's sinister commands.
The psychological twists and turns of the film kept me guessing as to what would happen. By the end, I wanted Donnie to discover his metaphysical truth and somehow prevent the end of the world.
The philosophy of this film left me thinking for days after I first saw it. I saw it again recently, and I still think about it. I think it's fair to say that "Donnie Darko" is a film that leaves a lasting impression.Was this review helpful? Yes - NoGood one

This is not my typical movie pick. However, we were running out of movies and stuck with this one. It turns out that I enjoy the movie. Very unpredictable ending.

What can I say? This film is unique, stunning, dark, compelling and beautiful. Not a "teen flick" by a long shot, but as other reviewers have said, this is a film that demands a certain level of intelligence. If you want a film full of action, with a simple plot, look elsewhere, if however you want an intelligent film, with an interesting philosophical plot, then Donnie Darko is well worth checking out.
I have only seen it the once so far (last night), but I can understand why other reviews have said you need to watch this film more than once to pick up on all the details of the plot.
The only film I can think of that this can be compared to would be Jacobs Ladder, as there are certain parallels with the final twist, but overall, Donnie Darko is unique, a true masterpiece of cinema, well worth seeing. I'll definitely be watching it again.

Pros: 1980's; Unbelievably twisted storyline leaves you thinking for days
Cons: I still can't figure out some of the plot
Without the help of the "extras" on the DVD, and without watching it at least twice, you will not get this movie. There's nothing I love more than being totally confused, then all of a sudden one scene hits me like a brick: "OHHHH so THAT'S what happened." The whole movie is like that. It all starts with a jet engine falling through Donnie's house, who has what, at first, you'd think are psychotic sleep-walking episodes, one of which takes him out of his house, causing him to avoid being crushed by the jet engine. Next thing you know, the universe is ending, and somehow time travel gets thrown in there. If you're the type of person that likes turn your brain off and let your TV and DVD player to do all the work for you, don't watch this movie. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

I was at my friend's house for a sleepover when I saw this movie. By the time it was over, only the two of us (out of the whole party) were awake. I was glued, this was undoubtedly one of the best movies I had ever seen. I also loved the fact that (at five AM) I barely "got" it at all. Between the two of us, it became the biggest topic of conversation. Whatever it was, it was mindbending. Eventually, some of the events cleared themselves up, esp. w/the help of extra viewing, something I minded not at all. :)

Not only the best thought provoking movie i've ever seen, it had the best cast and soundtrack. Jake Gyllenhaal is an inspiring actor and all i can say about him is 'OSCAR NOMIATIONS' As for the movie itself it captures every genre-comedy,romance, tiny bit of horror (Frank!) sci-fi and everything else you could wish for!!!
I completely recomend this to anyone and i can asure you it will change your whole out look on life!!
