Pro Reviews: Don't Let Him Down

  • All Music Guide

With the sound of a brief guitar intro, the tone of this classic recording kicks into hard-driving shout gospel. Having enjoyed a long history of quality recordings, this 1973 release from the Pilgrim Jubilees is no exception to their ability to capture ageless issues of perseverance and religious commitment. A generous balance between the group's two main lead singers, Clay Graham and his older brother Cleve Graham, give the listener a chance to hear both of these vocal legends at full throttle. The title cut "Don't Let Him Down" has become one of the Pilgrim Jubilees' trademark songs that is still part of their repertoire. Though this original version is merely a taste of what was to come on their 1979 live version recorded for Nashboro records, the power and fervor is defiantly present. This album represented a shift in recording technology, as well as the group's song selections. This album places a great emphasis on society and the injustices of life in America during the early '7...0s. Though messages of social reform was not a new concept for the group, the radical messages of selections such as "Trouble in the Street," "It Isn't Safe Anymore," and "A Great Tragedy" were definitely risky jabs at police brutality and other political and social issues. The trademark sound of Bobby McDougle's soulful guitar is present throughout, and his use of the new multi-tracking technology is effective in making a memorable album that is yet to enjoy reissue in its full original format. - Minister Donnie Addison, All Music Guide Read more Less
