    an overlooked masterpiece

    This is one of my ten favorite albums...and there are a lot of contenders for that spot. This musical song cycle about the breakup of a marraige (Cole's?) isn't always fun listening, but its stylistic charms far overshadow the somber subject matter.... Cole's collaborator Blair Cowan comes up with some of his sharpest arrangements, and Paul Buckmaster does his usual magnificent job arranging the strings, especially on "Butterfly". The songs vary from the Byrdsy rock of "Weeping Wine" to the Glen Campbell-ish"There For Her", and the finale, "What He Doesn't Know" has one of the loveliest melodiesI have ever heard. Matthew Sweet plays bass on most of the tracks, as well.I recommend this album very highly. Read more Less
