Pro Reviews: Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See

  • All Music Guide

Okkervil River's Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See seems to be an album that exists and doesn't really stick out, but at the same time isn't a poor example of the alt-country sound. While there are a couple really great songs on here ("Kansas City," "Happy Hearts"), much of the material is just there. It contains the obligatory twangy vocals, harmonica, slide guitar, and tragic songmanship, but it doesn't really contain the rich depths that many of the alt-country, No Depression acts are capable of. None of this is to say that Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See is a bad album. Just the opposite. It is good music, but unless one finds themselves to be a connoisseur of alt-country, this might not be the best place to start.

Okkervil River

Combining folk-rock inspirations and alternative rock sways, Okkervil River creates a particular visionary sound, strongly founded on dark and profound lyrics and on chaotic visions of patterned sound compounds. Okkervil River is a mutual project of Will Robison Sheff (vocals, guitar), and Seth Warren (guitar), born when both were still in high school, in Meriden, NH. A... Read more
