Pro Reviews: Don't Be Misled! [KDJ]

  • All Music Guide

Of Kenny Dixon Jr.'s many Moodymann records, the Misled record in particular stands out as an example of how he subtly brings in a sense of quiet yet hard-hitting ideology. The record's label sets up a comparison of the suburban and inner-city life, aiming derogatory comments towards suburban youths as posers: "The City: a place where most suburban kids think they're from/Detroit: A place where neggahs roam, neggahs like me/don't be misled" The epic title track opens with a sample from Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead"; from there the sounds of inner-city life -- sirens, car horns, cars driving by, and various hustle and bustle -- fade and a synth melody kicks off two sides of thick funk, accentuated throughout by an excellent use of vocal samples. The undeniable funky old-school feel of this record makes it one of his best.

Dixon began producing early in the '90s, and inaugurated his own KDJ Record... Read more
