Don Henry came to prominence when Kathy Mattea's version of "Where've You Been" (co-written with Mattea's husband Jon Vezner) won every award in sight in 1990 and 1991. Henry grew up in suburban San Jose, CA, and moved to Nashville in 1979, where he spent four years copying tapes for publisher Tree International (now Sony/Tree) and then became a staff songwriter there. He wrote tunes for Mattea, John Conlee, T.G. Sheppard, and Conway Twitty and won Tree's Writer of the Year award in 1990 before recording his first album.
