Argento studied at the Peabody Conservatory and at the Eastman School, and served as professor at the University of Minnesota. He co-founded The Minnesota Opera, and his most important works are operas written for the company. One of his best known operas is Postcard from Morocco, written in 1971. He is also recognized as a composer of song cycles and choral music.
