    Another David Lean Masterpiece.

This love epic can proudly stand alongside Lawrence of Arabia. Thanks to the ingenuity of David Lean and his team, essence of the complex Pasternak novel was brought to screen. Excellent performance from the entire cast. Brilliant directing, cin...ematography, set/costumes design, and music score, especially Lara’s theme. Watch the haunting beauty of the ice-bound villa at Varykino; the brutal slaughter of peaceful civilian protesters by the imperial dragoon; the cold and lonely journey of Zhivago as a deserter; and the close-up facial expression of an incredulous Lara when Zhivago told her that he was leaving her. Close your eyes and listen to the lyrical and poetic tone of Lara’s theme by the magnificent balalaikas. This is a love story of Zhivago with the Russian revolution as backdrop. A man who loved two women equally at the same time, but above all his country.Zhivago met Lara under unusual circumstances, went their separate ways only to meet again as co-workers in a far away hospital. They departed once more to rejoin their families, but fate brought them back together to consummate their love. Zhivago made a choice between his pregnant wife, Tonya, and Lara but fate would not permit it! The final choice he had to make was between Mother Russia and Lara. Guess or watch the movie to find out which one he picked?! Read more Less

Almost looks better than original film in theaters, if possible! Just a feast for the senses, and a classic movie. A must for the collector!

A wonderful movie about love, war and su

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 17, 2001

I saw this movie when I was a young girl at the theater in my hometown...I instantly fell in love with it....Since its initial release, I think I must have watched this movie at the very least 40 times. I watch it every holiday season and try to get ...friends to watch it that may never otherwise see it. I own two copies of the movie, for fear I will play it too much, ruining it....Omar Sharif and Julie Christie make you feel like you are involved in their on-screen lives. The others characters in the movie are equally talented and the movie is just wonderful..If you have not ever seen this epic, please do yourself a favor and see it soon............. Read more Less

    EPIC ZHIVAGO STILL HOLDS INTEREST

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 31, 2000

Old enough to have seen 'Doctor Zhivago' 6 times during its initial release in theatres in the 1960's, and a few times on video since then, I recently watched this epic film once again and discovered, to my delight, that there remain certain qualiti...es of this film which seemed new to me. Among these are the historical backdrop of the story provided by the Russian Revolution, the measured precision of Tom Courtenay's performance as 'Pasha' become 'Strelnikov', the brief but riveting boxcar scenes with Klaus Kinski as the counterrevolutionary political prisoner and forced laborer ("Lickspittle!"), and the symmetry of the love story, symbolized by the Moscow tram scenes which depict Zhivago's first and last near encounters with Lara near the beginning and end of the film. This great film tells of an extraordinary romance set upon a huge social upheaval in Russia which affected the rest of the world for 70 years. And after all these years, it still holds up as a pinnacle of grand filmmaking. Read more Less

    A Classic Russian Romance

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 3, 2000

Well i saw this movie for a Global STudies (history) class and I must say although it was LONG and i had to wait impatiently for Doctor Zhivago and Lara to come together in the second (better) half of the film, it was a wonderful, but sad, movie. I ...guess most romantic movies are sad. Omar Sharif (is that his name) is really really talented, but i think that more than that Julie Christie is absolutely wonderful. Then why is it that i dont hear her name anymore? I'm sure she is out there making movies, because she is just too talented not to, but i dont know where she is because I never heard ofher before I saw "Zhivago." of course the fact that I am 15 years old may contribute to that! Geraldine Chaplin is really really cute. I mean maybe that is not the word for a talented actress such as she, but thats what she is: cute, innocent, in love, and absolutely, as well as sickely unaware of her husbands unfaithfulness. The one thing I could not stand was the train scene. It is so long, and although it may prove symbolic, it is LONG and i almost fell asleep on my living room couch. Then the first video ended and rewound and i had to go back and watch again. Then in the second video we (FINALLY) see Doctor Zhivago and Lara in love (although i am lost as to what happened to bring them together so quickly). Basically, the first video introduces all the characters in "Zhivago" and the second brings the plot to view. I guess this is not much of a review, considering that I am only 15 years old and am a sophomore in high school, and i am more than 100% sure that someone else could write a far better review than I. But since I liked the movie so much, I would like to hear what other people (more knowledgeable than I) have to say about it! (Besides i have to analyze the movie for school, so any help is appreciated). Thanks for reading! P.S. I am sure the book is better. The book is always better than the movie. I have yet to read it, although my parents are immigrants from Russia themselves (I am American-born). Thanks again for reading! Read more Less
