In the three years that bridge the release of Dancing at the Crossroads (1993) with Dochas (1996), the Crossing have evolved from being a respectable band into becoming one of the choice Celtic folk groups. Although lacking the reputation of Patrick Street or Battlefield Band, this Chicago sextet needn't take a back seat to anyone. Tony Krogh's ability and knack for melody makes him one of the most listener-friendly pipers around. In addition to playing with greater authority, fiddler Jenny Ingerson has developed into a confident songwriter with three strong selections including the humorously anachronistic "Jiggle the Handle." Hilde Bialach's sleek cello helps to mold the other instruments into a tight and cohesive package. Not to be overlooked, the other players perform splendidly as well, incorporating guitar, bouzouki, whistles, bodhran, and harp at all of the appropriate moments. The alternating lead vocals of Krogh and Bialach, along with the interspersed instrumentals, prevent D...ochas from falling into predictability, but more importantly, the Crossing establish a newness and an element of anticipation throughout. And thankfully there are no throwaway songs like "Bold Little Preacher" from their previous album. - Dave Sleger, All Music Guide Read more Less
