    Waiting for a Rerelease

    By dsvoss  May 21, 2001

This Dizzy Gillespie album, featuringLalo Schifrin, has been haunting me since I first checked it out from a library five years ago. It isn't available for purchase, and even used LPs on eBay tend to go for a bundle. But the jazz world will be many... times blessed if it is ever rereleased on CD. The Jobim performances have a rare intensity, even for Dizzy's Afro-Cuban period. "No More Blues" (which you can get on the "Girl from Ipanema" Jobim compilation by Verve) builds to an ecstatic groove, and Schifrin is all over the piece with exceptionally perceptive solo work. I recall the CD bonus track by Schifrin, Mount Olive, as a delightful (and delightfully stretched out) jam. Gypsy-influenced guitar by a relative of Django's (Elek Bacsik) also spices up the mix. Long out of print, this highly enjoyable LP finds trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and his quintet joined by guitarist Elek Bacsik and percussionist Pepito Riestria for some joyous explorations of bossa nova rhythms and related material. This extended version of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "No More Blues" is classic and the quintet's renditions of "Long Long Summer," "Desafinado" and "Here It Is" are also memorable. In addition to the trumpeter, altoist Leo Wright and pianist Lalo Schifrin have plenty of solo space. All of Gillespie's Philips recordings should be reissued on CD.

Biography

Dizzy Gillespie

Dizzy Gillespie's contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis' emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated. Somehow, Gillespie could mak... Read more
