Coming Back to Life
, October 8, 2004Reviewer: arvind k - See all arvind k's reviewsPros: Great music, amazing cover
Cons: None
In the future, when most people would have forgotten what Psychedelia was all about, I hope some people rediscover some CDs of Pink Floyd. And I hope Division Bell is one of them.
Many Waters' Fans wonder about the quality of this album. Most of them are too proud to admit that this album is as good as, if not better than, most of their older albums. The cover, which is inspired by the statues on Easter Island, is perfect for an age more inspired by technology-based music than meaningful songs.
Poles Apart is a great track if you're a Pink Floyd fan. Marooned is beautiful again. High Hopes is where Gilmour really displays his genius and proves without a doubt that he is one of the best musicians of all time. If you're looking for great lyrics, listen to Lost for Words. And there is the evergreen Coming Back to Life.
Every person, I know who has heard the song at least twice, has really liked this song. Hats off to Mason, Wright, and Gilmour for coming out with this masterpiece. Highly recommended for people who like real music that transcends all genres. ...

Pro Reviews: Division Bell
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews The second postRoger Waters Pink Floyd album is less forced and more of a group effort than A Momentary Lapse of Reason keyboard player Rick Wright is back to full bandmember status and has cowriting credits on five of the 11 songs, even getting lead vocals on "Wearing the Inside Out." Some of David Gilmour's lyrics (cowritten by Polly Samson and Nick LairdClowes of the Dream Academy) might be directed at Waters, notably "Lost for Words" and "A Great Day for Freedom," with its references to "the wall" coming down, although the more specific subject is the Berlin Wall and the fall of Communism. In any case, there is a vindictive, accusatory tone to songs such as "What Do You Want From Me" and "Poles Apart," and the overarching theme, from the album title to the graphics to the "Iyou" pronouns in most of the lyrics, has to do with dichotomies and distinctions, with "I" always having the upper hand. Musically, Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Wright have largely turned the clock back to the preDark Side of the Moon Floyd, with slow tempos, sustained keyboard chords, and guitar solos with a lot of echo. - William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide |

Pros: Crackling, stinging emotion
Cons: It's Their Last Album
Those clods from Launch have got their head up their arse. This is good Floyd, understand that it's the post-Waters Floyd, which is every bit as different as the early Floyd is from the Floyd of Dark Side of the Moon.
Look, if you love the band, you love the craftsmanship, the production, the attention to detail. If you are a casual observer, go listen to their early stuff, Dark Side, Animals, The Wall and get their pure essence.
