    Re: wonderful for music lovers

While clever, this chick is primarily a flake. A real musical oddity. A strange female Lyle Lovett is my best description. This is not an album for everyone. The music is post modern blues/hillbilly/jazz, is contrived and almost embarrassing to ...hear. Her voice goes from pleasant to grating. The lyrics go from ridiculous to absolutely bizarre. Not terrible, but just wanted to let you know what you were getting into before buying it. Read more Less

    wonderful for music lovers

this is one of the best albums i have though it's short (it's only 40 minutes) is worth the 12.99 i bought it for. Originally, i heard her single Blackbirds on napster. THe lyrics were very clever and her voice was full of personality. You can tell ...she believes in what she sings, and her musical ability goes from slow ballads to fast and saucy yodeling country style songs. I had this album playing over in my head for weeks. Another plus is that she is not a marketing idea, what i mean is that she was not constructed in a studio as many of the bands of today. So in conclusion, buy it. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Distillation

  • All Music Guide

Distillation is an excellent name for this album. Rather than being of derivative of roots music, bluegrass, country blues, and folk, McKeown distills these genres. She melted down these styles, incorporated the spirit of them, and came up with her own voice. All but one track here is original. They reach back into remote, rustic regions for sounds and ideas. McKeown is a mirror that reflects it all in new form. The Virginia native comes up with a sound that is part gypsy jazz, part blues, part folk-pop. The one cover is an excellent rendition of a Tin Pin Alley classic, "Mustn't Kick It Around."
