    classic debut

i love the smooth sound of every song on this record. they sound so similar, yet so different and sophisticated. i think this is their best album, along with "brothers in arms" (although "brothers in arms" has a different, evolved dire straits sound ...and i prefer the older records).i bought the remasters copy in 98 in a little record shop on kos island in greece and it was probably the most music i ever got out of a record at such price (it was really cheap). i used to listen to it during the hot evenings in greece while sipping on my drink. it is real laid-back music. only JJ cale could do it better.this classic should be in every good CD collection. it was actually completely out of time when published, but still it became a incredibly successful record. Hits the ground running

I notice Water of Love gets replayed from time to time on the local radio as new listeners *discover* this classic track.

Good mood music with their first big hit, Sultans.

Dire Straits' minimalist interpretation of pub rock had already crystallized by the time they released their eponymous debut. Driven by Mark Knopfler's spare, tasteful guitar lines and his husky warbling, the album is a set of bluesy rockers. And while the bar band mentality of pubrock is at the core of Dire Straits even the group's breakthrough single, "Sultans of Swing," offered a lament for a neglected pub rock band their music is already beyond the simple boogies and shuffles of their forefathers, occasionally dipping into jazz and country. Knopfler also shows an inclination toward Dylanesque imagery, which enhances the smoky, lowkey atmosphere of the album. While a few of the songs fall flat, the album is remarkably accomplished for a debut, and Dire Straits had difficulty surpassing it throughout their career.

Biography

Dire Straits

Dire Straits emerged during the postpunk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound up... Read more
