Different Light sheds a Tuneful Revelation

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 10, 2006

    Pros: Tight Vocals and Instrumentation

    Cons: Dated

This album features some of this California girl group of the 80s' biggest hits including "Manic Monday", "Walk Like An Egyptian" (it started a small dance craze...remember doing it?), and the wonderous sounding "If She K...new What She Wants." If you have this record and just listen to it for the popular hits, try this track out: "Following", sung by very tall bass player Michael Steele. She was the best, I think. Good song, too. 1 Manic Monday 80 Written by Prince (under the name of Christopher) this album opener is undoubtedly a classic. 2 In A Different Light 85 An example of The Bangles, when they get everything right, they can come up with a fabulous exciting piece of we...ll-written pop. Love the energy they have in the solo section with the added percussion and the vocals answering the guitar phrases, followed by the ascending bass arpeggios, leading back into the final chorus. Great stuff. 3 Walking Down Your Street 59 A dodgy piece of 80s pop trying to be 60s pop, but hey, that's The Bangles :-) 4 Walk Like An Egyptian 77 A huge dance novelty hit - but has a very cool rock & percussion arrangement that elevates it above the cheesy. It is a classic. 5 Standing in the Hallway 49 A plastic piece of cheesy pop, with catchy melodies its only saving grace. 6 Return Post 40 Average. 7 If She Knew What She Wants 76 A timeless Beatle-like melody, it's a great song. 8 Let It Go 76 Upbeat and great Crosby/
    Stills/
    Nash/
Young-like singalong vocal arrangement. :-)) 9 September Girls 86 The best song on the album - yes - even better than Manic Monday. It has ended up being an 'unheard classic' - such a cruisy and beautiful summery melody. Somebody did a great cover of it once but I can't remember who - I will have to find out, and download it!!! 10 Angels Don't Fall In Love 78 When I first bought this record, this song was my favourite song. Upbeat, jangly guitars and catchy, a Bangles trademark. 11 Following 70 Moody acoustic guitar ballad. 12 Not Like You 65 Another cheesy piece of pop, but has a good feel and happy spirit to it - and the lead vocal part is sung by the drummer!!! Average song score for the album: 70 / 100

Pro Reviews: Different Light

  • All Music Guide

The band's second album went to number one on the strength of the first single, "Manic Monday," written especially for the band by Prince, and its follow-up, "Walk Like an Egyptian," penned by '80s hit-making giant Liam Sternberg. Though even more polished than the debut, Different Light is a testament to the mid-'80s sound, replete with synthesizers (Mitchell Froom assisted); even on Jules Shear's magnificent "If She Knew What She Wants" and Alex Chilton's standard "September Gurls," the band's vocal strengths shine through the gloss, and their pop sensibilities are not completely lost.

Bangles

Originally Colours, the Supersonic Bangs and the Bangs, the all singing/all performing four-woman the Bangles formed in 1981 and sprung from the LA Paisley Underground scene. Later they traded their garage band roots for a slick, heavily-produced pop sound that turned them into one of the most successful chart groups of either gender during the '80s.
