Dife, "Fire," is a politically-charged album that looks at the social and economic situation on the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique with a steady eye. Although the tone of the album is serious, it is also uplifting, and the music moves with the determined swing that Kassav is so capable of generating. The title cut is sung with lots of soul by Jocelyne Beroard. The other vocals, sometimes duets, are equally inspired and full of spark. "Rara" is another standout track sung by Jean-Philippe Marthely. It puts out a load of steam and energy. Although somewhat dark, the album offers encouragement in a swinging vital way. Kassav has a unique ability to creatively combine the drive of Antillean zouk with lyrics that speak directly to the heart of the people. Highly recommended.
