Fans of Johnny Lee (Sonny Boy" Williamson should avoid this dodgy recording like the plague no matter what it costs. This sounds like a gig recorded either in the late 1950s or early 1960s with a crummy tape recorded at a gig from the audience. Muddy (not as in Waters), hissheavy and barely tolerable sounds mar this otherwise fine performance. There is nothing whatsoever lackluster in the music; it must have been exciting to be in the crowd for this one. But listening to it on compact disc is more than a chore, it's soul deadening. There are many, many Sonny Boy Williamson collections out there for low prices, try something other than this one.

Easily the most important harmonica player of the pre-war era, John Lee Williamson almost single-handedly made the humble mouth organ a worthy lead instrument for blues bands -- leading the way for the amazing innovations of Little Walter and a platoon of others to follow. If not for his tragic murder in 1948 while on his way home from a Chicago gin mill, Williamson wou... Read more
