    Son House Delta Blues

    By Peter K  Dec 17, 2005

    Pros: Clean, crisp, clear, amazing

Cons: regrettably, Son´s output is limited

An amazing album, marvelously remastered and digitally restored. Old and very old blues cuts tend to sound like, well, coming out of a rusty coffee can. Today´s stupefying technology in the hands of an expert audio engineer can turn that tinny sound... into a very modern rendition of a master´s art; which is exactly what happened here. Son House has never sounded truer to himself -- digitalized clean up has made him sound as he truly did those many years ago, up on a stage or half hidden behind a curtain in some Mississippi chicken shack, without the distortion old timey technology added -- and which only purists value. I´d much rather hear an artist sound like himself than squeezed through a fluttering mike membrane by an uncaring radio engineer. So thanks, Pat Kraus, for your great job! Thanks for the pleasure of being able to enjoy Son House just as his many fans did back in the war- and post war years. Read more Less

This singledisc set collects Son House's Library of Congress sessions for Alan Lomax in 1940 and 1941, and House's huge rasping voice and vibrant slide guitar style are everywhere here, both on the solo selections and on a handful of AfricanAmerican string band pieces that find friends Leroy Williams (harmonica), Fiddlin' Joe Martin (mandolin), and Willie Brown (guitar) lending a hand. These intimate field recordings, which were tracked at Clack's Store near Cormorant, Mississippi, combined with House's complete Paramount recordings from 1930, which amounted to three brilliant doublesided 78s ("My Black Mama," "Preachin' the Blues," and "Dry Spell Blues"), form the true heart of House's recorded legacy, since his rediscovery sides for Columbia in the '60s catch him, quite honestly, with diminishing powers. Catfish Records got it exactly right by combining everything here with House's powerfully dynamic Paramount 78s for 2000s Preachin' the Blues collection, and it remains the only trul...y essential Son House purchase. - Steve Leggett, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Son House

Son House's place, not only in the history of Delta blues, but in the overall history of the music, is a very high one indeed. He was a major innovator of the Delta style, along with his playing partners Charley Patton and Willie Brown. Few listening experiences in the blues are as intense as hearing one of Son House's original 1930s recordings for the Paramount label. ... Read more
