    Pros: cost, quality

Cons: support, poor documentation on CD drive

Overall, this is a great machine. Compared to others costing as much as twice as much, I think it is undervalued.I think they saved money by dropping a floppy drive, serial port and printer port (who needs them now?) Printers, mouse, even a floppy ...hooks in via USB anyway.I would like to see one more USB; it comes with three. One nice feature is the installed Ethernet port and the priced in wireless G card. The buyer has to install the wireless card software, however, which I found to be a bit odd.Great buy! Oh and it comes with a printer but Dell sends these chintzy "trial" cartridges with it. They last about five minutes and then you get to go to DELL to buy more. Give the printer away when it comes. Read more Less

    A good bargain

    Pros: Cheap

    Cons: Celeron processor are slow

I was looking to buy a laptop with my limited financial resources. Desktop were out of consideration since I wanted mobility. The chepaest laptop of the block was Dell Inspiron 1000. It is sufficient for my needs of surfing the net and Using microsof...t office. I some times use Media players. Firstly it is decent in it`s looks. It is light enough. It is slow to tell you frankly, but hay! look at the price and then decide. Anyway Celeron processors are know to be slow. The other drawback is that the battary lasts only for 120 mins. I think 3 USB ports are enough for anyones need at a time. There is no wireless network installed. The supports sucks as others have suggested. Don`t even think about using the free printer that comes with it. On the whole it is a good buy with its low price and it is definately value for money. Read more Less

Great value, but not for power users

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 29, 2004 | 9 out of 11 found this Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Computer review helpful

Pros: cheap cheap cheap and well made

Cons: RAM restriction, no ps2 port, no built in wireless

This is a solid machine by all means. It's strong and very functional. As for general users, just upgrade to 512MB (max) and all your surfing + multimedia prgs run very very well.I bought it because it was cheap at $616 after rebate (special for ...me). And found the 14.1 screen much easier to deal with and easy to pack/carry vs a 15.4 screen Toshiba. That inch difference in size and 2 lb in weight makes real difference, when you have to carry it in NYC for 20 minutes. Not to mention that Toshiba will not replace a broken screen even during the warranty period for any reason. It lacks bells and whisles. No way to turn down the speakers without opening up the controls in LCD or connect my KVM switcher or PS/2 keyboard. In my old toshiba, I had sliding controls at the front and I could turn in all the way down prior to taking computer out of sleep mode. I don't need to hear that big welcome to windows gingle. And I had to get a PS/2 to USB conversion gizmo to use my KVM. USB keyboard and KVM's are NOT yet prevailent. These are minor quips.Another problem is no built in wireless. This means adding a card that sicks out about an inch. Annoying at times, but I wanted A type wireless and not B type. So, this works out well for me. Too much interference in this Apt complex for me to take the G type card for wireless. I will get cut off everytime someone picked up a 2.4Ghz phone in the hood.By far bigger issue is with RAM. 512MB max RAM? I feel like stuck in 1999. XP takes up good 200MB easily. This is not a laptop for someone who wants open up big Photoshop files or do big database operations.Otherwise, I like it alot. Simple/elegant and sturdy. Most of all it's a real bargain at this price.I don't require too much support, but I have heard that this can be a real problem from Peter (Pankaj) or Susan (Sumitra). Read more Less

Dell a BAD deal in the end

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 6, 2004 | 4 out of 7 found this Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Computer review helpful

    Pros: price

Cons: quality, no AGP slot, no floppy, trial AV

Dells have No floppy drive, users are buying them after because they need them still. They are also cutting out the AGP slot on a lot of thier models and are using onboard graphics only with absolutely no ability to upgrade your graphics later on. ...I have seen countless people buy a dell and then cant play games or do heavy duty graphics work like animation the day after they bought thier new dell machine and have no way of upgrading the graphics if thier is no AGP slot. So basically they had bought a machine that wouldnt allow them to do what hey wanted with thier computer. Shame some accountant made the decision to eliminate componants to save money to get out at a lower price from what used to be a good name product. By the time you get what you need in order to upgrade your machine to the spec you really need in todays world you will need a external usb floppy or a new case that one can fit in and will take a new motherboard as well, a new motherboard with an AGP slot, a full one year anti virus software as the one provided is only a trial subscription of 60 days, and in the end pay more than it would have cost to buy a good custom built pc from a good local dealer that would most likely be FAR better equipment. He will no doubt provide better customer support as well. Independent custom builders combined(channel GID)for the first time in history hold a majority market share of Intel CPU purchases over the major multi national companies of Dell, HP, acer, Compaq, etc. combined Intel CPU purchases. They build better machines with later technology if they are good ones. Look for Genuine Intel Dealers with certificates showing and they generally are good builders of PC's Read more Less

Dell is the worst support company

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 17, 2004 | 3 out of 5 found this Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Computer review helpful

    Pros: price is ok

    Cons: service is the worst

it takes at least one month for your order no matter what they tell you. They lie for time always. Support is horrible. At least one hour for calling through.

    just enough for my needs...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 28, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Computer review helpful

    Pros: affordable and practical

Cons: bit heavy(i'm just being lazy) and sound system not it,but...

The inspiron 1000 is my first investment in a laptop. I know how to work on computers but I don't know a thing about them. So, it was a real challenge to get something good out of the gibberish-ish terms they use to describe the Inspiron 1000. It... came with the Windows XP home edition and a couple of softwares such as Wordperfect and microsoft money. To my disappointment, they did not provide the Microsoft Office which I usually use. It also has Adobe, media player, a special juke box... My most valuable asset with this computer is the external 1350 wireless PC card i ordered with it. It allows me to go on the internet without any direct access. It a little bit slow but hey, I got to check my mail and everything i want. I also got a bunch of updates from the Microsoft website using it. It's not the most stylish notebook around but if you are looking for the essential, the Inspiron 1000 should suit you. oh,almost forgot the support definitely sucks, they had me hanged on the phone for like a life time...and at the end i was not helped. Good Value

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 26, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Computer review helpful

    Pros: Price

    Cons: No floppy drive

A great value for the money. Made a couple upgrades and was still cheaper than anything else I could find with comparable features. Good for the basics - games, internet and home use. Not meant for business use or power users, which should be obvious... given the options and price. Read more Less

    Manufacturing delayed, shipping delayed

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 30, 2004 | 1 out of 1 found this Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Computer review helpful

    Pros: Price

Cons: Dell breaks Christmas Advertising Implied Promise

I ordered 12/16/04 in response to both (1) availability by Christmas--an implied promise of the Dell advertising then current on the Web and (2) price. Price is fine, but latest promised delivery date is 1/3/05, 9 days after Christmas, twice as long... to receive as was implied in their advertising. Is Dell the Grinch?!!I'd use 'em again, my other 2 PCs are both Dells, but I'll take their claims of rapid response with a grain of salt. Read more Less

    Great computer for basic needs

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 2, 2004 | 1 out of 1 found this Dell Inspiron 1000 Laptop Computer review helpful

    Pros: Cheap, Clean, Study

Cons: no printer port or PS2

I bought this computer after my old laptop broke, and it would have cost over 1000 to fix the screen of my old one. This is a good computer, it is relativly fast, and holds up to my music and gaming habits. I haven't had any problems, except I ne...eded a printer, because my old one did not hook up via USB. I also have an external hard drive where I store my music etc, and a PS 2 port would be nice for these devices, as they are designed for PS 2 and would run faster.Overall, it is a good buy for someone that just needs a computer, and isn't a hard core computer user. I also liked the payment plans... Read more Less
