    haque gives deja-vu a once-over

    By Amelia  Sep 5, 2000

fareed haque delivers an excellent, powerful performance on deja vu! i heard the title track on a local jazz station one day; thought i was listening to a duet by inti-illimani and led zeppelin. i didn't know crosby stills nash & young could be revi...sited just as poignantly melodic as before.fareed has also captured all of the vocal and instrumental harmonies in six strings. joe bianco stands out with his perfect blend of rock and jazz drumming. tim mulvenna brings to life the latin cadence that fuels the rhythm of the music.the cd features 14 tracks, only two of which are original haque interludes. the highlights include:carry on: haque lets loose on this track, actually accurately mimicking the vocals on his guitar.woodstock: this rock classic is transformed into an eddie harris-esque high-energy delight!the title track: it's all the goodness of the scat beginning of the original, coupled with, extended into the rest of the song!in order to fully appreciate the impact of csn&y and acoustic perfection, you must submit yourself to the power of this haque recording. this cd deserves to be overlooked neither by acoustic jazz guitar fiends nor csn&y diehards.i simply wish all cover albums could be so fulfilling! Pro Reviews: Deja Vu

  • All Music Guide

Blue Note continues its intriguing series of jazz recordings offering beginning to end covers of influential 70's pop albums with Fareed Haque's masterful take on Crosby, Stills, Nash Young's Deja Vu, which draws upon the classical guitarist's jazz fusion chops as well as the Latin and Middle Eastern colors that comprise his own ethnic background. Treating the quartets' folksy melodies as blueprints, Haque takes a largely unplugged trip through a sequence of tunes just begging for out there, almost avante garde, adventures. He plays it safe a few times, most notably on a lovely but bland reading of "Our House," preferring most of the time to delve deeper into the rhythmic possibilities of the rich legacy. Ron Perillo's electric piano adds a Doors-like retro acid trip effect to the free for all jamming of "Carry On" and "Woodstock," while Haque challenges himself stylistically with everything from laid back blues riffs to graceful flamenco runs.
