    What a Wonder!

By Eric Halcon  Aug 15, 2007

    Pros: A Great Definitive Collection!

    Cons: Absolutely Nothing!

When one talks about the musical legends the 20th century has produced, only a few credible names pop into mind. Sure there is always Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles to fill in the list, but long before the advent of hip-hop music, Stev...ie Wonder has already left an indelible mark with his inspiring words of wisdom through his music. In this hefty serving of 21 tracks deemed to be Wonder's classics, this collection proves its worth as a must-buy for any fan. A legend in his own right, Wonder opens this set with a live rendition of "Fingertips (Part 2)", which is a chart-topper from 1963. Not to be missed in this CD are the classics "Uptight (Everthing's Alright)", "For Once In My Life", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours", "You Are The Sunshine of My Life", "Superstition" and "Higher Ground". Even the music loving present generation is familiar with Wonder's ballads such as "I Just Called To Say I Love You" and "Overjoyed". A test of true artistry is his ability to withstand the test of time. For some, it is the acid test by which one's legacy is passed to future generations to come. Not all artists are fortunate to have Definitive Collections. As for Stevland Hardaway Judkins, this is another feather added to his cap comprised of 22 Grammy Awards and his musical genius. There are few albums about which I can say that I love every song... This is one of them.

When you're putting together a 21-song collection of a major artist who's had more than 40 Top 40 hits, inevitably there's going to be a lot of good stuff left out. Stevie Wonder's long and varied career (not over when this anthology appeared) really needs more than one disc to even adequately summarize the highlights. But this single-disc comp does squeeze in most of his best-known songs, from 1963's "Fingertips, Pt. 2" to the mid-'80s number one hits "Part-Time Lover" and "I Just Called to Say I Love You." Along the way there's "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "I Was Made to Love Her," "For Once in My Life," "My Cherie Amour," "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," "Superstition," "Higher Ground," "Living for the City," "You Haven't Done Nothin'," "Boogie on Reggae Woman," "I Wish," "Sir Duke," and more. There is a sharp decline in quality following "Masterblaster (Jammin')," but at least that only lasts five songs. Of course, there's a lot missing too: "A Place in the Sun," "Shoo-Be-Do...o-Be-Doo-Da-Day," "If You Really Love Me," and "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," to pick only some obvious candidates. Why exactly the 1967 single "Hey Love" (a Top Ten RB single that barely made the pop charts) is included is a mystery, though at least it breaks up the predictability. For casual fans it's a decent career-spanning overview, though, and even the most casual fan will sense the musical genius and enormous artistic growth that shines through most of the selections. - Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Read more Less
