Pure Heaven

Meryl Streep is at her absolute best. Albert Brooks and Rip Torn are fantastic. You've got to see this.

This is one of those films (like Raising Arizona, f'rinstance), that I will watch every time it comes on the tube. The entire Judgement City idea is one of the cleverest things I've ever run across. Besides top performances by Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep, Rip Torn is at his "Larry Sanders" best, plus there are great cameos/short roles by Buck Henry and Shirley McLaine.
You'll laugh. You'll guffaw. You'll chortle. Have some snacks handy - this movie will also make you hungry (food is one theme). BUY THIS!!!!Was this review helpful? Yes - NoMAGICAL MERYL
Much has been said about Meryl Streep's talent. Mostly about her disappearing behind accents. Unfortunately some of here lesser roles go un-noticed. Like hers in DEFENDING YOUR LIFE. It is really a supporting performace and probably her most subtle. She is given an opportunity to be soft spoken and strong willed at the same time. It is quite simply a lovely performance filled with all the grace and beauty that only a true star can bring. Warner Home Video has created a decent DVD transfer. And if you have not seen the film it is a gem. Albert Brooks' dialogue and situations are quite funny and the film does have a sweet tone. Worth having in your collection.

Defending your life is both funny and poignant. A rare gem of a movie which can be light and witty as well as deeply moving. But point in fact, I'm pretty sure it was I who coined the phrase "Totally All Nude."
