Deep Impact should have been called Deep Disappointment. It is one of the stupidest films in recent years. There are no memorable lines,
the cast is atrocious (Freeman as president, no less!), and the visuals are second-rate. As a
parody it might have been entertaining; but
they chose to play it straight and created, instead, a film that should be forgotten as
quickly as possible.

Perfect contrast to Armageddon

You compare this film to Armaggedon. After all Armageddon cost a ton more to make so the movie should be better. Even though it is about the same subject. This one have more of a human story to it. It did take a while for the asteroid to land but at least it landed. Nothing happened in Armaggedon. Thats one main difference. The effects were solid, could have picked better actors but overall it is a movie made to contrast the flash of Armaggedon. It was well made and enjoyable.

I am surprised there are so many negative reviews of this movie. I realize that some people need action shot after action shot or they fall asleep, but quite obviously there are a few movies out there which have a message. In the case of Deep Impact, the message is hope. If there were a comet or meteorite headed toward the Earth, I hope that our President (whoever he/she may be at the time) would react and plan as Morgan Freeman's character did in this movie.

It's not fair when people compare this movie to Armageddon, a movie which I enjoy watching as much as this one. Armageddon was a rock-em, sock-em roller coaster ride with a great cast and a lot of fun one-liners. Deep Impact is a study of how real people might react in a situation where their very lives could hang in the balance. That's the difference. If you like the explosive, roller-coaster ride, watch Armageddon. If you want to see the human drama, through characters in whom you might see yourself, then I highly recommend Deep Impact.

Shite! Honestly, what was the point? To make money, that's all. When is Hollywood going to start making real films again? I'm not going to hold my breath on that one. Morgan Freeman is a brilliant actor, so what the hell is he doing in a "film" like this? God knows.

Hollywood seems to be churning out formulaic, star ridden, mega budget blockbusters that please the crowds, rake in the profits while getting taken to the cleaners by the critics. Disaster movies have seemed the be the “craze” over recent years, the majority high in effects but lacking in solid characters and storylines – the best example being “Armageddon” of the “meteor hits earth/end of the world” genre…a typically average money spinner which the public lapped up. Despite this, it is refreshing once and a while to see an intelligent, emotional “disaster” vehicle come along in the name of the cerebral Deep Impact.

Deep Impact, while a blockbuster in it’s own right, is deeper, thought provoking and in many ways more intense than Armageddon ever will be. Director Mimi Leder doesn’t brush the special effects aside, but merely emphasises its effects on the diverse selection of characters dealing with the potential end of the world. Much more of an emotional roller coaster ride, rather than an explosive one – but effects fans are definitely not left out…and neither are the stars – Robert Duvall, Tea Leoni, Elijah Wood and Morgan Freeman lead the major roles, while an impressive supporting cast keeps things interesting that includes established actors Maximilian Schell, Vanessa Redgrave and the ingénue Leelee Sobieski.

Overall, Deep Impact offers something much more than your average run-of-the-mill disaster epic, yet still keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Morgan Freeman is an incredible actor! The entire cast of this film deserves a big round of applause! Not as much of a commercial success as "Armageddon" but it takes the astroid concept a little differently. This is more of a phylisophical approach rather than action packed. Similar in effect to "Contact". Effects are great, script is deep, filming was first rate!!! Two thumbs up!!!

An embarrisingly bad script, flat meaningless characters, and a pointlessly terrible story leaves the film Deep Impact a total disaster. You'll actually be cheering when the stupid wave destroys the Earth, and gets rid of all the boring characters. There isn't really even much of a story, just a bunch of pathetic talking. So rent it if you want, but you'll more than likely be sorry.

The visual effects in this movie were just about all it has going for it. Towards the middle of the movie I was just hoping the thing would hit and kill everyone.
