just to add to what i've said in my DE9 Closer to the Edit post and also to add to what the others said:while closer to the edit takes things a step higher with the total inclusion of final scratch- richie's masterpiece may be this disc (buy the wax ...if you spin!). it's a seamless groove of tech/tech house and ambient. showing richie's vast knowledge of cutting edge electronic music. if you're a mills fan, a steve bug fan you will notice a few tracks on this disc that were cut up just so. again, a master work, from a master artist. "D.E.+909s" is amazing. I often get annoyed when fellow listeners do not appreciate the last third of the mix which is much more minimal and dub-wise than the more club-friendly opening section. It's arguably the best portion and shows how techno sho...uld be directing itself. Great to hear Maurizio's fifth release (M5) getting another airing and Mills proving he can rock with tribal beatz. • All Music Guide

Decks, EFX 909 is the next step for Richie Hawtin after his Mixmag live album from 1995 and the increasing minimalism of his subsequent Plastikman material (the Consumed LP). Hawtin displays not only his talents as a mixer but also as a producer, using turntables, an effects processor, and a Roland pedal, plus a TR-909 drum machine for added beats. An extension of his live sets (though not entirely recorded live), the album employs a degree of improvisation rarely heard on mix albums. Cycling through 38 tracks in just over an hour, Hawtin ranges through driving, minimalist techno with inclusions from Richard Harvey, Jeff Mills, Surgeon, Pacou, Heiko Laux, Vladislav Delay, Maurizio, Rhythm Sound, Marco Carola, and a few of his own tracks. The result of Hawtin's obvious labor of love is a mix album that manages to be simultaneously intense and moody, pummeling yet restrained. The beats are clipped and precise, rarely deviating from a 120 BPM pace. Though fans might resent the fact that... it wasn't recorded live, Decks, EFX 909 simply couldn't have been done well in a live setting -- at times, Hawtin has four records spinning at once, and the layers of sound he adds to the show make this album a highly effective techno statement. Another devastating release from North America's most effective dancefloor experimentalist. - John Bush, All Music Guide Read more Less

Richie Hawtin

Although of English and Canadian origins, Plastikman's Richie Hawtin is closely connected with the current Detroit techno scene associated with figures such as Kenny Larkin, Stacey Pullen, Eddie Fowlkes, and Derrick May. His Plus 8 label -- co-owned and operated with John Acquaviva -- is one of the most influential experimental dance music imprints, and Hawtin's own tra... Read more
