HBO delivers another stunning, evocative drama in DEADWOOD. The channel has an impressive reputation when it comes to producing edge-of-your-seat television (THE SOPRANOS, SIX FEET UNDER), and DEADWOOD follows neatly in that tradition. Set in 1876, the story unfolds just two weeks after the defeat of Custer at Little Big Horn. The town of Deadwood is located in the Black Hills Indian Cession, and is populated largely by illegal settlers and miscreants looking to make a quick buck. Among them are Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), who owns the local saloon; Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant), a former law enforcer; and the infamous Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine). Some awesome acting combines with intricate storylines, absorbing direction, and some impressive sets to make DEADWOOD another essential series from the HBO stable.

    Pros: Historically Accurate, Realistic

    Cons: Language and situations may be offensive to some

    Deadwood has to be one of my favorites. Although it has some rough language (some of the expletives were not even used in the 1800's) The rest of the show is pretty accurate. From the shooting of Wild Bill Hickock played by Kieth Carradine to the... elections held on the seris finale, it gave you a glimpse into a more violent part of our history. Deadwood is not for the timid but it's a great seris. Even though it was cancelled a year before it was originally supposed to be, I was impressed with the acting, especially with Calamity Jane. She fitted the image perfectly. I hope HBO continues with their promise of doing a few more episodes or a mini-seris to finish it. Deadwood is a "Must-See!" Read more Less

    Pros: Everything!

    Cons: Too short a series

    Now, I'm not a fan of the 'western' genre by any stretch of the imagination, but I tuned into HBO one night to check out this new series and after five minutes, I was hypnotized. Another great series from this groundbreaking cable statio...n. From the creator of "NYPD Blue" (David Milch), "Deadwood" absolutely blew my away! The performances are incredible (especially David Carradine at Wild Bill Hickock), the storylines very strong. The story centers on the historical town of Deadwood and it's struggle to stay what it is, a lawless, heathen place amidst the settling of America's new west. Remarkable stuff! I can't speak for the DVD yet since it's not out, but I can't wait to pick this set up! And I'll be looking for Season 2 shortly. With both "Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under" coming to an end, "Deadwood" is a remarkable achievement that should get a bigger following in coming seasons. Read more Less
