Pro Reviews: David's Album [Bonus Tracks]
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Joan Baez had started working with Nashville musicians in 1968 with Any Day Now, and David's Album, done about a year later, was one of the better products of her move toward a more countryoriented sound. Dedicated to her thenhusband, David Harris, who was serving time in prison as a draftresistor, the album has all kinds of topical resonances with Baez's life "If I Knew" was a heartfelt peace anthem that surely opens the album because of what it seems to say for Harris, while "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" (which got even more exposure as a single Bside in 1970), one of the most beautiful songs that Baez ever recorded (featuring her harmonizing with Mimi FariƱa), is a tribute to all of the politically and financially disposed of the era. All of this may sound very quaint 40 years on, but in 1969 it was a very potent message, and the singing and playing still hold up; Baez sounds uncannily like Sandy Denny on much of this album, setting aside some of the deep stridency that marked her earlier singing in favor of a more relaxed performance that shows her in the most engaging manner of her career on numbers like "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" (where she's joined by the Jordanaires). David's Album has transcended its origins in part because of the sheer range of material on it its recording coincided with a point where Baez had started to reach beyond Bob Dylan and older folk figures such as Pete Seeger for repertory, in several different directions, including gospel ("The Tramp on the Street"), countryrock ("Hickory Wind"), and country ("Green, Green Grass of Home"), the presence of which helps make this one of her most engaging albums. The presence of Nashville session talent such as Grady Martin, Hal Rugg, Pete Drake, Jerry Reed, Buddy Spicher, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, and Fred Carter, all in top form, doesn't hurt, either. David Harris is long since out of jail, and he and Baez parted, but it's still an excellent album. [The 2005 reissue of the album contains historical liner notes and two bonus tracks: "How Can I Miss You" and "The Last Thing on My Mind".] - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide |
