Dario Argento Collection Vol. 3: Deep Red/Tenebre (1975)

A two DVD set of giallos (murder mysteries) from the Italian horror mastermind Dario Argento (SUSPIRIA), this set contains two of his finest: DEEP RED (1975) and TENEBRE (1982). DEEP RED cemented Argento's international reputation (he had been popular in Italy for years) and stars David Hemmings as a jazz pianist who witnesses the murder of his neighbor, a psychic who had read the mind of her murderer. Soon, he has met up with a resourceful reporter (Nicolodi) and the two set out to track down the killer. A supremely effective thriller, DEEP RED is also Argento's first film where his visual style has been fully realized, and many consider it his masterpiece.

TENEBRE is another style-fest from Argento, originally released in butchered form in the US as UNSANE. Franciosa portrays Peter Neal, an American mystery novelist promoting his latest release in Rome. It's not long, however, until a killer is hot on his trail doing evil deeds which mimic those of the murderer in Neal's book. This very basic premise is executed in an exceedingly and beautifully stylized method which makes the film truly fascinating to watch. Those who do not like the sight of blood, however, should be forewarned -- it flows frequently, and in copious amounts. Both films are presented in their original, uncut versions.
