An Australian cement truck driver, Danny (Ifans), decides to try to escape his life in the drabness of the city after a fight with his girlfriend (Clarke) prevents him from taking a long-awaited vacation. Tying large helium-filled balloons to his deckchair (ie, a lawn chair), Danny sails away into the sky, where a surprise thunderstorm sends him hurtling out over the Outback, eventually finding a small town to settle down in incognito, while the media whips itself into a flurry about his disappearance. Reinventing himself in the small northern town of Clarence, Danny soon falls in love with the town's only parking cop, Glenda (Otto).

    Pros: Well-executed sight gags

    Cons: Aussie humor doesn't always translate to America

    After hearing of the real life episode of a man accidentally getting stuck in a lawnchair and having to be rescued when the helium lift from balloons left no easy or safe way to be reversed for a landing, I was up for the fictional portrayal. Just a...s the original stunt was a lark or escapist motivated, the film does best when asked to provide similar entertainment of light, not dramatic, diversion. While the escapades Danny encounters at times strain credulity, the real-life feeling of being trapped by circumstance and the woes of maintaining a dysfunctional love relationship ring true. Meanwhile, Miranda Otto shines with the natural beauty of hope, humor, and honesty. By film's end you might be nostalgic for an old Boxer twin "Beemer", appreciative of a holiday to Australia, and wary of wily redheads. I give it 4 stars out of 5. Read more Less
