Marcella Detroit is still probably best known for her #1 hit "Stay" while she was with Shakespear's Sister, but that was only a brief stint in a productive career. She's been producing her own stuff since 1994, and "Dancing Madly Sideways" is her first album of the new millenium.
It doesn't disappoint.
The title track showcases her voice beautifully: starting off with a lovely troubadour tone, and very quickly slipping into the ethereal soprano she does so easily. The song is no slacker, either, starting with an interesting intro with various sound effects, gliding into a little quiet guitar bit, and then developing an insistent beat that sweeps you right along, then stepping into something that resembles nothing more than a Petula Clark interlude, and then going into rock---and it all works, beautifully.
And if you can keep yourself from dancing during "Built For Speed," you'd better check your pulse.
I hate being so uniformly positive about this album, but it's a good one throughout. Most albums I own inevitably have one or two misses, but this is one of the few I have where every track is well above average. Highly recommended.
