Pros: Intense Psychological Drama
Cons: could barely hear it, poor sound quality
This is a Must see. If you like psychological drama. directed in a documentry meets screen play meets musical way, Definatly right up there with Stephen Kings and TNT Drama.
Even better the second time I watched it, I could buy it and never get bored!
I love this film, it's just this film and beautiful Bjok made me cry, though I've never cried since I was 18 years old.
A good news, the day before yesterday, I found a nice site where there are a great many movies which is in stream format, you can on-line watch them, even can download them to your hard drive. If you have interest, you can visit the "Stream Media Channel" of www.jummpa.com
Wow! What an intense film! Bjork is more convincing than most Hollywood actors who call themselves "professionals"! Why she wasn't at least nominated for Best Actress I'll never know. I think most people failed to recognize this film as a musical. It's the story of poor woman who is going blind yet working her hardest to prevent the same from happening to her son. Her only other source of happiness other than her son is her love of classic musical films. What a wonderful yet sad story! My only beef is that the beginning is quite slow. Please allow this film the chance to touch your soul!
I'v never cryed in a movie, this is the first time.
I've never seen an actress as good as Bjork !
i love bjork to begin with, but i never thought this movie/musical could have been any better. the music was magnificent of course and the story was tough on the heart. great story line, everyone must see it. itll make you cry
Good movie, bad DVD that make you sick and vomiting
Is it possible to make a movie combining such drastcally different genres such as European Art Film, an American Musical and a Crime Movie? I guess the Dancer is the only brilliant exeption in the whole Cinema History.
I liked this movie so much, that I don't even want to comment it. I just want to ask this question: HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE, SUCH A MASTERPIECE NOT TO BE NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR?
Sadly,Europe and America seem to be located on different planets.
Bjork is one of the most interesting individuals on the planet, so out of curiosity I checked out this film. She is absolutely brilliant - intense, expressive, beautiful. You are so absorbed by her performance that you feel her character Selma's pain. Bjork's music is an acquired taste, but the songs here are very melodic and some of the best work I have heard from her. This movie is a hell of a downer, though. Be prepared. Watch it for one of the most intense performances you will ever see, but don't expect a happy experience.
Great story! Bjork is a sensitive actress who portrays a single mother who is going blind with a painful, yet innocent angst. Musical performances probably too long and pointless for most viewers and detract from the story line. I do recommend this film however because of fine performances of Bjork,Catherine Deneuve and David Morse.
Lars Von Trier has made a new masterpiece--the existential portrayal by Bjork as the helpless straining mother is pure perfection----Von Trier, as he did in 1996's Breaking the Waves, has used hand held cameras, little or no make-up (and Catherine Denueve is still stunningly beautiful), quirky angles and lighting to create the best film of 2000----
Dancer In the Dark is a touching and mesmerizing film. It stars Bjork as Selma, a cezchslovakian immigrant in the United States. Selma is afflicted with a hereditary disease which will leave her blind. Her son Gene (Vladan Kostic) has the same disease. Selma works day and night to save up enough money so that Gene can have an operation to cure him of his illness. Meanwhile, she is going blind and retreating into a dreamworld of a hollywood musical. Suddenly, one of Selma's friends (david morse) betrays her and Selmas life spirals out of control to a horrifying finale
There is dancing and there is darkness. You may
have guessed that already. As for the rest, there's no
way you'll guess it. It's quite unlike anything else
I've ever seen. Bizarre, slightly surreal, also
hyper-real. Yadda yadda.
If you're curious, I
encourage you to go see it...
