    It's In His Eyes

This is an album that I would recommend to the hardcore Phil Collins audience. Many would throw this album off as being to [Peter] Gabrielish, however, Gabriel's session drummers could never match the powerful rhythm Phil has on songs like "Lorenzo."... Songs like this portray Phil as the jazz and world music-related artist that he is, without giving off the impression that he has had no influence on this album. It is worth buying and it is rather sad that many Collins fans chose not to support Phil on this project. It is well produced, features acoustic drums (no synths or electric drums), more musicians (not just Phil being multi-instrumental) and features some of Collins’ best-written songs to date. Although Phil never got much success in the North American market with this album (it was a hit in the rest of the world), he did get something - Satisfaction. It may not necessarily be my favorite albums, because of certain songs, but it is musicianship that will stand up to time’s sometimes hardening effects on traditional Pop music. Now lets dance into the future of Phil Collins with his new album, TESTIFY, due for release in November 11/12 (World/North America), 2002. More of a return to Hello I must be Going. Though it still has shades of Both Sides. Luckily, Phil realized that having acoustic drums was the main focus rather than his electronic drums, which were detracting more and more from his music. Let's hope... that Phil is o.k. with his hearing, and that he will return to more of his roots with earlier style Genesis or Brand X. This album puts me to sleep though. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Dance into the Light

  • All Music Guide

Following the bleak But Seriously and Both Sides, Phil Collins delivered the considerably lighter Dance into the Light, his first upbeat pop album since 1985's No Jacket Required. Not only was it a return to the musical style that brought him to the top of the charts during the '80s, but Dance into the Light was the first record Collins released since leaving Genesis, which made it all the more crucial to his career. For the most part, the album treads familiar territory RBinfluenced dancepop, sensitive ballads, and brooding midtempo ruminations but there are several occasions where he stretches out, incorporating worldbeat influences into his style.

Biography

Phil Collins

Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult-contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a 2 hit in his native U.K. (the song was a Top 20 hit in the U.S.). ... Read more
