    DAMITA JO

By Ty  Mar 20, 2004 | 19 out of 20 found this Damita Jo review helpful

Pros: Janet ges better and better every time! It has great lyrics, bumpin' beats, and is a cd you definitely have to own!

Cons: The only bad thing about the cd is that after hearing it, I was left with wanting more!

I have had a chance to hear the entire cd already. I can't really find the words to express what I feel about this project. STRAWBERRY BOUNCE makes you want to run to the dance floor and well..... bounce! LOL Her new single I WANT YOU is brillian...t! I love the lyrics in that song so much. And the catchy SPENDING TIME WITH YOU will leave you humming the hook to yourself all day. MY BABY, with Kanye is hot, as well as JUST A LITTLE WHILE. R&B JUNKIE takes you back, making you want to do all of those "Old Skool" dances. Its a jam! I really love ISLAND LIFE, and the song THINKING ABOUT MY EX is a good song that I think many can relate to. I wonder if her ex-hubby, Rene has heard that song. I bet he was flattered while listening to it until at the end of the song when Janet says, "Its not who you think it is..." LOL I have my own opinions about Rene, but this is not the appropriate place for me to express it. I like how Janet expresses different sides of her, letting us get to know small things about her in the interludes. The interlude, I believe its called TRULY is a beautiful piece, reminding me of POETIC JUSTICE when Justice, (Janet) would be reading poetry throught the film. I couldn't help but laugh when I heard the interlude for COUNTRY. Janet is poking fun at her middle name and how it sounds so, well.... country. LOL It was quite obvious to me that when I heard the song WARMTH that this is going to be the song Janet uses during her world tour to pull a lucky man up on stage for. SHE WOULD BE CRAZY NOT TO USE IT! All I am going to say is that the song is a jaw dropper, and I'll let you buy your own copy of DAMITA JO to hear just what it is exactly about. Overall, this is the best cd of hers yet. If for some crazy reason you do not have a single copy of Janet's work, this will be the one you will for sure need to buy. Remember, it is available March 30th! You can even preorder a copy now. Read more Less

    Probably her best album!

By Adonis  Mar 24, 2004 | 6 out of 6 found this Damita Jo review helpful

Pros: All the filler on the album has been released already.

Cons: maybe a little explicit for kids but there's a clean version.

Yes, all the only filler on this great album are the songs released already. When you hear them on the album though they sound great. Everything was well crafted with this album and fits right where it should on this album. This is IMO Janet's be...st album to date. I used to have to skip around on her other CD's but I feel guilty skipping even one song/interlude. The radio hits are as follows: All Nite, Damita Jo, Strawberry Bounce, My Baby, R&B Junkie, Thinkin Bout My Ex, Slo Love, Sexhibition, Island Life, and Like You Don't Love Me. Read more Less

    GETTIN KINDA TIRED

By Dice  Apr 3, 2004 | 5 out of 5 found this Damita Jo review helpful

Pros: She's isn't consistently giggling or saying "edit" all through the album

Cons: The cutesy bubblegum pop thing is really tired the closer you get to 40

I have been down with Janet from the get go and I have bought every album she has ever released, including this one, but I have to admit, it's all just beginning to sound the same. This time around she adds better production and better samples bu...t she's STILL half naked and singing about sex and love in that whispy voice. I love Janet but it's just all getting so tired nowadays. With R&B (Donnie, Dwele), Soul (Goapele, Amel Larrieux) and Hip-Hop (Nappy Roots, Cee-Lo) doing what it can to break the boundaries, it's dissappointing to hear JJ still stuck on that teenage groove of "Escapade" or "Someone To Call My Lover" here on "I Want You"... all three songs better equipped for a Mandy Moore or Jessica Simpson, not a full grown woman, twenty years in the business, twice divorced, supporting her trouled sibling. Janet's life experience's dictate she come out harder than the half naked choreographed high school cheerleader that she sounds like here. I still support her, I just long for the day when she reinvents herself into something more substantial than boobs, hair, riding "packages" and giggling how good a guy's smooth and shiny feels so good against her lips. Janet's Back!

By William  Mar 25, 2004 | 4 out of 4 found this Damita Jo review helpful

    Pros: Great musicality!

    Cons: Not for young ears.

Janet Jackson returns to the music scene with a vengeance, and she's brought a few friends (Damita Jo, Strawberry) with her! On the awesome title cut she sings about her life in the spotlight and asks "Do you like me just for what you see/Do... you think that I'm the person you watch on tv?" The album has some great r&b cuts sprinkled with pop sensibilities which makes it just right for those looking for something other than the mostly drab fare out on radio today. Read more Less

Same old Janet just revitalized, fresh, and unique

By LJ  Mar 29, 2004 | 3 out of 3 found this Damita Jo review helpful

Pros: She leaves you craving for more!

    Cons: Parental Advisory...

Janet does it again but this time she leaves out most of the pop we're so used to and turns in a different direction. Now she has more of an R & B feel but she's still holding it down. To be honest, you'll be carried away with the awesome... music and vocals but then you will wonder why her cd is rated the way it is. Okay, so she says "mother fuc@#r" in one of her songs, 4. Strawberry Bounce, but that's it. Other than that, the cd gives a nice vibe that's so her and I think that this cd is so much better than her last album, All For You. You'll find yourself dimming the lights, bobbing your head, and rocking to number 5. My Baby (featuring Kanye West), grooving to the old skool joint, 11. R&B Junkie, and wandering off into space thinking about old girlfriends and boyfriends with the sweet-soft ballad, 14. Thinking about my ex. Like all her albums though she gives you her sexy side which she shows "no strings attached" in numbers 15. Warmth, and 16. Moist. Also, you get the funky-poppish side with her songs, 2. Damia Jo, 3. Sexhibition, 10. All Nite (Don't stop), and number 22. Just a little while. Whatever you're looking for in music, you'll find it here, unless you're looking for country and hardcore metal. No techno either, maybe a little dance but not a lot but any fan will love this album just like the rest and maybe even more. Read more Less

    Janet, Oh Janet!

By Remi  Mar 29, 2004 | 2 out of 2 found this Damita Jo review helpful

Pros: This sound is somewhat new for her, but at the same time, it feels "all Janet." not only is there a lot of hip-hop, but there's a great sound on songs like "SloLove," "R&B Junkie", and "All Nite (Don't Stop)" (whose rhythmic vocal style takes the listener back to 1993's "If"), plus the raw sexuality of "Moist"

Cons: misfires on some of the r&b-esque tracks like "Like You Don't Love Me", and overdoes it a little on "Warmth". Also, subject matter very limited.

after the Superbowl fallout, i KNEW i had to get the album. it was my way of showing solidarity as i supported an icon... or so i thought.it was only today that i remembered just how excited i was when i heard in january that she would be releasing a...n album (i believe my exact words were "Finally! some real female music after all this Beyonce garbage!")and janet delivered... oh, did she deliver!the innovator, the risk-taker, the originator of the "baby-maker" (note to Carl Thomas) comes back with some real gems here. but, i digress... let us begin at (you guessed it) the beginning.the atmospheric "looking for love" intro is awesome, although that's more a nod to Jam & Lewis than her. however, she steps up to claim her credit soon after. i always say, "Bold is the artist who dares to have a title-track on a self-titled album." Such a thing usually reeks of self-indulgence. however, i'm willing to forgive the energetic, surprisingly hip-hop-laced track, "Damita Jo".i would continue in my track-by-track analysis, but i just remembered ms. jackson's album was 22 tracks long.on the whole, it's an awesome effort. one does cringe, though, asking "can't she talk about anything but sex anymore?" where are the Rhythm Nations and States of the World? the world isn't a better place now than it was in "1814", so why stop commenting on what goes on outside the bedroom?Damita Jo's split in 2; the first half being mainly hip-hop, the 2nd, slow and sexy. of the first half, few songs can match up to the infectious bounce-track, "Strawberry Bounce" and the beautiful R&B gem, "My Baby." 'Bounce gives the odd illusion that Jigga (whose voice is sampled) really IS in the studio with her, ad-libbing on the track. and 'Baby makes even the most cynical ears appreciate its apparent sincerity... but if i hear Kanye (a genius, though) recycle another verse from his "Kon the Louis Vuitton Don" mixtape album, i'm gonna kill someone!that said, other standouts include "R&B Junkie" and "Spending Time With You", the latter, reminding me a lot of brother Michael's "Butterflies."t
he slower half begins with the album's true gem, "I Want You". Janet brings a level of sweet sincerity to Kanye's ingenious throwback that trumps Alicia Keys' also-great offering on "You Don't Know My Name.""Warmth&q
uot; & "Thinkin' 'Bout My Ex" are acceptable, but the real remaining standouts are "Moist" (which picks up where the insanely sexy "Would You Mind" left off) and "SloLove," whose feelgood sound makes us yearn for a simpler time. It's a great album, and a great comeback.for that, i say Thank You, Janet
