Pros: Will display photos well
Cons: Limited Audio File support; Limited Video Support
The DSM-520 sounds like the perfect solution for streaming video and audio files from a PC or Network Attached Server to a television or audio system. However, the truth is far different.
Video: Yes, the unit will show MPEG2, 4, AVI, Xvid, etc. but on my unit, only AVI with Xvid codec actuallly works and that is intermittant. MPEG 2 will not synchronize. There is NO help from D-Link. Regarding the Nero Digital MP4 encoding: Yes it will play some files that are so encoded, but not if they are done in other than "Standard" mode on Nero Recode 2. Basically, the support for Nero Digital is very limited. All in all, the video support is very poor. It does not matter if the unit is connected by wireless or wired ethernet; the results are the same.
For audio, only MP3, low level WMA are some OGG Vorbis are supported. If you're feeding audio to a real audio system, these codecs will not do. FLAC is better, WMA lossless is good or WAV is good. FLAC has only limited support on the DSM-520.
While D-Link has 24/7 telephone supoort, I have yet to find someone who can answer my questions. When asked about the Nero Digital issue, I was told to contact Nero. Not even a suggestion as to how to setup Nero Digital so that it would work with the DSM-520. Nero did supply the data, but after it was said and done, the DSM-520 could not play a file to completion and the resolution was below par.
All in all, the unit promises much and delivers very very little. Frankly I sincerely feel that I wasted my money. This technology has a long way to go.

Pros: Easy Configuration, Great for Sharing Your PC Collection

I just purchased this unit for myself, it's great for what I need. You can stream most any type of media off of your pc wirelessly to your television in the house. The setup is simple and quick, it has a great automatic update system for the firmware and software and it's capable of outputting HD quality to your HD-Ready or HDCapable tv. I have several movies that I have downloaded via online that I would never actually purchase from the store unless they had a dollar going out of business sale, so I can stream those to the tv, it will also let you compile your music into folders and play your mp3's and also will slideshow your photo albums. Controls are pretty simple and straight forward for even the most illiterate people. If HD quality isn't your thing you can find the cheaper version the DSM-320 with the same features, just the lack of HD, I believe at Best Buy for around 150.00.

Pros: Stream music, photos, video from any UPnP AV compatible media server, stream online radio from radio@AOL, live365.com, direct USB thumb drive support, stream Windows Media DRM protected content using Windows Media Connect, HD interface, support most of the media format, above all affordable.
Cons: Photo thumbnail support is horrible, UI can be improved, no support for bread crumb, no music album art, video forward/rewind functionality can be improved.
D-Link DSM-520 Media Receiver (D-link call it MediaLounge) is one the best among the available media receiver in the market. Not only it's much better than it's predecessor DSM-320, but with ton's of additional features it's affordable too. Having USB thumb drive support in the front gives option to the user to play video files directly from the external hard drive.
If you are in the market for Media Receiver/Hub then you may end up buying this. Direct connection to the USB drive open up lot of option for many users.
It works great with Windows Media Connect and TwonkyVision media server. DivX support was surprise for me.
