Pros: Cheap, easy to use
Cons: Reliability is poor
The D-Link DWL-G700AP is an easy-to-use 802.11g wireless access point. Set-up is quick, but quality is poor.
Physical
Plastic case with metallic paint
Single external antenna
Single 10/100 ethernet port
Recessed reset button
LEDs for power, LAN and WAN
Slim 5v, 2A wall wart (sideways cord exit)
Configuration
This WAP has a simple web interface for configuring all of its options. Set-up time is less than 5 minutes for a pro, or 10-15 mins for a novice.
There are a few minor web-page design issues in the WIRELESS section when using WPA.
WEP, WPA and WPA2 were tested and work flawlessly.
Wireless MAC filtering also works both by exclusion and inclusion.
DHCP works, but can be disabled if you have another DHCP server (ie, your actual internet gateway).
Performance
Sync rates are good. Generally, 36-54Mbit, even stuffed under a table, in a corner, through walls and electronics.
Negotiation of encryption takes only a few seconds.
Heat output is not noticed, even set to high transmit power.
Warranty
1 year parts and labor.
If a failure occurs, there is a support number to call.
The tech will walk through standard testing procedures.
Once verified failed, an RMA is opened via the web.
Reliability
In my personal experience with the product, intermittent IP failures on the wireless side would occur. Wireless association occurs normally, but the access point cannot be reached via static IP, nor can DHCP server be reached. The wired side works fine.
This occurred first at 1 month intervals, requiring a power cycle to correct. After about 4 or 5 months, power cycle would not fix. ...
