    Pros: uh, none

    Cons: overheating

Our 604 unit overheated and burnt our floor, and obviously created a fire risk in our apartment complex (obviously we have one unhappy landlord). D-Link said it was our responsibility to affix feet to the bottom of the router in order for it to not overheat. wha--? needless to say, there was nary a "foot" in sight when we bought it new. Let alone a warning in the instructions.

    Good Little Wi-Fi

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 30, 2006

Pros: Compact, good range, fast throughput

Cons: No dual band support (G) only

I bought this to replace my crappy Linksys WRT51AB which was Linksys basically abandoned after manufacture. So far, I've had little to no luck with any Linksys wireless networking devices. They suck!

This D-link is my first and for $50, it was a great buy. I've had it for a little over 2 years and it works great. Easy setup, great compatibility, good range, and solid throughput.

D-Link really stands by its product and even after 2 years, they release new firmware to improve its performance. Unlike Linksys which hardly ever supports their equipment.

Give D-Link a try. If this one fries out after this year, I'll buy another D-Link any day over Linksys. I've also had really bad experience with Netgear.

These idiots don't know what they're talking about

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 8, 2006

Pros: Great features with latest firmware update

Cons: No support Wifi A Support

These people have no idea what they're talking about, as an IT professional with a major in RF Engineering I can tell you that nearly every brand and model out there has the same exact signal strength and compatibility. The only thing that sets them apart is features based on your firmware such as internal routing, firewalls, etc...

The FCC has put a limit on the transmittion power of all wifi devices, and obviously each manufacturer is going to max this out. The difference is in the antenna design. When you hear the term dbi used to describe the gain of the antenna, you are comparing it to an isotropic theory. A true omni-directional antenna would be an isotropic antenna meaning it broadcasts in all directions equally. Unfortunately this is not possible. A high gain antenna will help only if it is used in the proper setting...

The higher gain the antenna creates, the more limited the broadcast area becomes. For exaple, the Dlink ANT24-0700 is considered a 7db gain, omni directional antenna. However, it has a 24 degree vertical broadcast range, and 360 degree horizontal range. The antenna must be "pointed" or aimed at the source you are communicating with. Anything out of that 24 degree spectrum and your signal will drop significantly! The higher the gain, the more directional the antenna is. If you had a 24db yagi antenna for example and you were trying to aim at something 100 ft away, a 1mm adjustment could mean the difference in 10% or 100% signal quality!

My best advice if you are having issues with range are to first make sure your antenna's are aimed correctly at eachother, and add a wireless access point or repeater if you are just too far away.

As far as compatibility, B and G operate on 11 different channels between 2.4 and 2.5Ghz, where A operates at 5Ghz. B is always backward compatible with a G router but operates at only 11Mbps, if you are very close to your AP and still have no signal it is probably because of an X10 device interfering (microwaves, cordless phones, etc) A has only 1/2 the broadcast range, but it will not pick up any of these interferances which makes it ideal in short distances. Bottom line is, B and G are compatible with any other B/G device, and A is compatible with any other A device! If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me at my alternate email pics7776@yahoo.com, I check it once in a while so don't be offended if I don't get back to you right away!

    Absolutely sucks

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 10, 2006

    Pros: Nothing really!

    Cons: does not work!

The device claims to support many standards, and you will find many of the settings possible, but most of them will cause serious trouble in the operation. e.g. Yes, it supports 802.11B and 802.11G, and Yes the setting says "G only" or mixed mode, but go ahead and try the mixed mode in a real mixed environment and the thing will go crazy!
The device resets completely every few minutes, and you loose all the connections, wireless and wired.

This is a defenite waste of money and time!

    OK, but not great

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 6, 2006

Pros: Works with Sony PSP and Nintendo DS, as well as some laptops

Cons: Cuts off desktop computer from internet

I use this strictly to play my DS online and to use the internet on my laptop. It is great for those. But when it's hooked up, it cuts of the desktop computer from the internet. If I'm not online wirelessly, I unhook it. It makes your computer say "a network cable is unplugged." If you intend to use it as a router, don't waste your money on this. However, unlike other users, I did get my rebate.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 2, 2006 | 1 out of 1 found this D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 Wireless Router review helpful

    Pros: Inexpensive

    Cons: Overheats

I received the router as a free promotion from D-Link when I purchased a notebook computer. After a few days it lost connection. I had to turn it off along with my cable modem and reboot my computer. I spoke to tech support and they told me that model has overheating issues. They acknowledge the fact that it is a faulty model and would do nothing for me.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 10, 2006 | 1 out of 1 found this D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 Wireless Router review helpful

    Pros: Price

    Cons: Quality and support

Part would not work right out of the box. I spent almost an hour on the phone with tech service who was the rudest customer support person I have spoken with in recent memory. If not for him, I'd have exchanged the D-Link for another. Instead, I'm going to try Linksys. If you decide to go the D-Link route, good luck and I hope you have better experience than I did.

    Don't count on rebates

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 18, 2005

Pros: Not to hard to set up

Cons: You won't get your rebate

It wasn't to hard to setup. I've given up on WEP because you get to many drop signals.

I'm really pissed about not getting the rebate. I sent the rebate of the day I got the product and my rebate got denied because is wasn't sent back soon enough? I bought on on 11/4 and the postcard they sent me denying the rebate was postmarked 11/21. I'm not a math major but that isn't even 30 days since the day of purchase.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 1, 2005

    Pros: None

Cons: Difficult to set up + whatever you send the company you will not get your mail-in-rebate

I bought this product because a friend recommended it. I spend an entire weekend trying to get it to work together with my cable modem. Did not work! Documentation is terrible. Plus, I submitted all the required documentation to get the mail-in-rebate, but did not get it. Don't buy this product!

    A good little home router

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 5, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 Wireless Router review helpful

Pros: Once you update firmware it works good..Security features

Cons: Make sure you get the newest firmware update

For the home and the price it's a good router.. The range is good and the security features are great!

It took me a couple of days and a few visits to Dlinks web site to get it setup correctly. But once I got it up and running I've had no problems for weeks. It hasn't been or had to be reset in weeks, the range is good, and with MAC filtering and WPA it's secure as can be.. Overall I am pleased..

    Good for the price

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 14, 2005 | 1 out of 1 found this D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 Wireless Router review helpful

    Pros: A good hub/AP

Cons: Missing routing feature, router part sucks

The guy that said his signal dies at 30 feet, he probably has interfearence from a cordless phone. Putting a better antenna on won't help this becuase it picks up the interfearence better as well as the real signal. 30 feet? that is really short. But i'm not saying that the wireless hardware is all that great, it does come with a pritty small antenna. I am looking into the orinco^? wavelan hardware:).

I got this on rebate for something like $20. Great for the price, still havnen't sent to rebate in yet :). Is has very good wireless features, including adjustable signal TX power, 3 different security encryptions and MAC filtering. It is a great hub/AP. The router part is ok, and it has advanced firewall rulesets, forwarding and all that stuff. It has uPnP(universal PnP support) which is nice for some people but I don't need it so I disabled it. Avoid most dlink wlan cards because they don't have open source drivers for non windows OSes! The ports on the hub/wan will plug into anything, I have never had to use a cross-over cable with it.

IT DOES NOT HAVE A ROUTER MODE(where it doesn't masquerade(share one ip) and acts like an internal router) OR STATIC ROUTES(where you can have a network behind it, throught the type of router stated above). I don't miss this because it isn't being used as a router in my house, just an AP and hub. I have a Linux box that does that. I hope they fix this in the firmware!

    Great Buy

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 3, 2004 | 6 out of 6 found this D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 Wireless Router review helpful

Pros: Every thing works terrific. signal is great

Cons: Could use another antenna because the signal could be better, but it is still great

This beats linksys 100%. I didn't have any trouble with it. I don't know about the other reviewer, but this is the best router i have bought. The wireless signal is great, but could be a little bit stronger. The new firmware update makes it so much better than it was.

    Go ahead, waste your money.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 28, 2004 | 8 out of 13 found this D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 Wireless Router review helpful

Pros: Attractive enclosure; relatively nice features.

Cons: Very bad signal - No range; quirky interface after firmware flash update; Poor documentation on how to use the "nice features".

If you give me your money, I can make better use of it than if you were to waste it on this thing.

I have fought the configuration of this unit from day-one. The signal only has to go 30 feet around a corner to get to the remote PC. Even after attaching external 6db antennas to both the router and the D-Link DWG-510 card on the remopte PC, I only get marginal and intermittent signal.

Tech Support also leave a bit to be desired. After calling them, I was told to “reinstall the drivers” and use the “Microsoft Zero configuration utility”. Neither, of course, worked. Beyond that, I was left to my own devices.

Word to the wise, investigate the signal strength of a unit before you buy it.
