Publisher Notes: Cybercrime Vandalizing the Information Society

  • Cybercrime has received an immense amount of attention in recent years, with media, law enforcement, and the government all doing their part to bring the issue to the public's attention. Increased usage of the Internet and World Wide Web has served to fuel interest in information technology and the accompanying problems. It seem that not a day goes by without a cybercrime incident of some sort being reported. This book is intended to be an introduction to the topic of cybercrime. It will investigate the various forms in which cybercrime may be encountered, including hack attacks, denial of service, and viruses. The book will also consider the significance of cybercrime on modern society.
-- The topic of computer crime and security is of continuing relevance and importance.
-- Up-to-the-minute, all you need to know overview.
-- No detailed technical knowledge necessary
-- Author a computer security specialist

Early chapters cover the origins of information technology, the basic principles of IT security, the definition of cybercrime, including some samples of real incidents. The text then moves on to consider the world of the hacker and the emergence of celebrity hackers. Denial of service attacks and web site defacement are considered, along with viruses and other forms of malicious software. The last few chapters of the book consider how the issues discussed have impacted various, especially commercial and political, aspects of society. The book ends with a brief look into the future of cybercrime.

The book is not a "how to" guide and does not aim to provide any sort of guide for would-be cybercriminals. Nor does it discuss safeguarding systems agains the various typesof threats (though some sections, particularly Chapter 8, offer elements of general advice). The overall intention of the book is to draw attention to the cybercrime problem and the forms it may take, and to offer some thoughts regarding its implications for society as a whole.

Business professionals, IT professionals, Managers, Students. Anyone interested in learning more about what they hear on the news.
