Region 2 DVD with Hungarian sub/dub

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 14, 2006

    Pros: Compelling story, Kafkaesque.

    Cons: A tad too predictable

This film by director Vincenzo Natali is a surrealist vision of seven people's attempts to get out of the mysterious Cube. A highly characterdriven, human film, where all the characters evolve and the viewer learns that first impressions are not ...always the real ones. Since the story is based so largely on the characters, their development makes some of the story plots quite predictable, yet the film is compelling to the last minute. Natali worked with some of Canada's best actors, who really make the film live. My DVD includes Vincenzo Natali's short "Elevated", starring David Hewlett, which, I think, would be worth an ode in its own right. Read more Less

Pros: plot goes and goes, a thinker...

    Cons: a couple mediocre actors

Contrary to other reviews I read, I think this is a very good movie. It's one of my favorites. It accomplished something that I had not seen before (again, contrary to other reviewers) originality. I thought there was originality in the acting st...yle, the logical progression of the plot, the music, suspense... everything. Yet, it's such a simple movie. It definitly feels like an indi film, but there is quality. I don't understand, do people not listen to the dialogue carefully, or what? Worth is the man. See it. Be opened minded. Do not compare it to spiderman. Read more Less

    Interesting but overused metaphores.....

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 16, 2005

Pros: relation to our human condition and our sense of purpose

Cons: done over and over already; terrible script and acting...

Today's movie industry is not one of entertainment, but one of profitable investments. When millions are spent on actors and other features, risk taking isn't much of an option anymore, and success is imperative. that is usually where lower b...udget movies capture my attention (and this is one of them, since everything was filmed in the same room, believe it or not...). the only problem with lower budget movies is that the focus on entertainment and the increased liberty with risk taking, while great, can be overdone or nullified by poor second level acting and script writing. This is the problem I saw with "Cube". As an avid movie watcher and amateur film critic (so these are opinions, not professional rating templates), I always look for storylines that will get me to look at a bigger purpose and give me added wisdom in my journey through life. the movie has some great metaphores. the wide diversity of character backgrounds and their specific purpose in the film relates to what we are all here for in life. the "cube" is simply a metaphore for life in general: no one knows what the big picture is and if there is any purpose to it, but we somehow all have a part in it. the characters' journey through the cube is simpy a journey through life, trying to figure out small pieces of the puzzle at a time, on the way to a greater understanding (and finally, hopefully salvation...). the ending is actually particulary relevant to this topic. as one of the character notices, if the team hadn't moved at all they would have remained right next to the exit all along. as many of us try to solve life's mysteries, the biggest pitfall is to stray from the path and lose yourself on trivial and positively destructive side paths . the fact that the only person to survive is the autistic character is not innocent either. all character could have survived, but yet their complexity and apparent superior abilities is what ultimately turns them agains each other and reults in their deaths. Hey, if we all got along and pulled together we could all survive the journey through the cube, aka life....but yet we always find ways to get in eachother's way, and maybe the only way for us to find salvation is to return to a simpler form of living (the autistic character). Now that being said, the biggest problem with "Cube" is that the script seems wildy out of place, with overdone and clumsy lines, and the acting in general is just awfull (out of tune drama and extremely artificial emotional dislays), which ruins the atmosphere of the movie. and there's nothing worse than a cheesy psychological movie to me.... Horrid Actors, Plot (ok), ending BLEW

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 27, 2002

It wasnt such a bad plot, just bad execution of the story. The second-rate actors obviously got chosen at a truck stop bathroom. The CG looks like someone crapped on the computer when they were making it. The ending? Heck, why put us in agony for 2 h...ours if you dont even offer a HINT at the ending! SAVE some money and buy Spiderman instead. Read more Less

    very interesting

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 5, 2001

Movies that leave a lot of unanswered questions generally fall into two types. One where the unanswered questions leave you really pissed off and frustrated, and another where it leaves you thinking and pondering. Cube was the latter type for me.I fo...und it thrillingly tense, and it kept me glued to my seat waiting to find out what happens at the end. What you do find out at the end really doesn't answer the questions you've had since the begninning, but does raise many others. I guess I'd call it an action movie for intellectuals. Read more Less

    freaky cinema

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 7, 2000

It had a claustrophobic feel and was TENSE. The acting wasn't exception, I hadn't seen any of the actors before and some of the main characters were stiff. The villian was easy to hate and the hero was an unlikely one, creating good character develo...pment. Overall it was entertaining but not great. Read more Less

    A Very Strange Movie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 9, 2000

Well, the topic is irrelevant. I cannot deny that there was a bit of creativity in the part of the producer to create this movie. But after watching it, I still find that there are many missing links. There were no introduction of characters (you fi...nd that out as you go through the movie), no complete answer to the question of why it was created, and why they were put in there (you will have take the short answers provided in the movie for granted). The acting was good. If you are into 'weird' movies (i.e., movies on weird super-artificial strange phenomena), this one is for you. Read more Less

    Sucked, but suspenseful

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 25, 2000

I have to admit that the only reason I kept watching CUBE is because I wanted to find out if they would get out. Other than that, the acting wasn't there and the characters themselves kept me disinterested in the movie. Definitely a rental.

    Cube

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 20, 2000

One good thing I can say for Cube is that once you start watching it you really can’t stop. I found Cube to be Intriguing and suspenseful and the director manages to support a good deal of action in a very small space. Some of the characters are un...derdeveloped and formulated. This film is definitely a rental at best I wouldn’t recommend buying it. Read more Less
