    Don't Waste Your Time

    By Daniel  Apr 22, 2003

As an avid fan of the original Cube directed by Vincenzo Natali, I was eager to see if a sequal to my favorite cult classic of the 90's would offer a similar experience. The beauty of the low-budget original was that the story did not attempt to expla...in why people where in the cube or what the cube was. We don't know who created the cube, but that was unimportant. What was important was the real paranoia and conspiracy stress of the people. That was the story. The point was that no matter how much you tried to figure out, you never really went anywhere... you were stuck.Unfortunately, The Cube 2 feals very familiar. No matter how much they try to go somewhere with the story, you never really go anywhere. The Cube 2 is less about characters and more about the Hypercube. I can just imagine listening to the director's commentary and I'm willing to guess that more than once you will hear the phrase "The Cube is really a character of its own." ::sigh::Well in this horridly (seemingly lower budget??) ripoff, director Andrzej Sekula has delivered nothing less than a dry attempt to remake the Cube. My only question is... why?The writer assumes that the great mystery is "what is the cube" and "who made the cube" and neglects to realize that in the original, you simply don't care and you never find out. The ending of the original Cube works because you never find out any details... only that someone makes it out.The ending of the Hypercube makes an X-File-ish mockery of the Cube and assassinates any concept of a story.I highly recommend that you avoid this made for DVD movie and just watch the original again. You'll be happy you did. Read more Less
