One of the best groups in the world: Sav

    Pros: Musicality

    Cons: Songs are too short

This is one of the best albums of Johnny Clegg. All savuka albums are excellent, in the sense that you will not even find one track that is not nice to listen to. People always talk about Dela and Cruel Crazy Beautiful World, yes, they are very beaut...iful songs, but I would like people to listen to Moliva. One of the first trademarks of Savuka music is i'ts basslines, the band's bassist is a genious, I believe his name is Solly Letwaba, all the songs' basslines are just out of this world. He does not play like ordinary bassists. Keith Hutchingson is another great musician with sax and keyboard. I think these two musicians are one of Johnny Clegg's best musicians. The blending of traditional zulu and western folk is just amazing, everythin fits like a puzzle in this album. Look out for the song Rolling Ocean, once you listen to this album you'll be hooked, that's the effect of Johnny Clegg's music. I would strongly advice anyone interested in Johnny Clegg's music to get a copy of Shadow man, Head Dust and Dreams and his last Juluka album Crocodile Love, now that's a cracker. Read more Less

Amazing mix of African music & rock

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 18, 2002

This is quite possibly the best fusion of African music and rock EVER! There is not a track here that's less than excelent, and many of them, like Jericho & Dela get stuck in your head and are nearly impossible to get out. I still love this album ev...ery bit as much as I did the first time I heard it in 1989. When you look back at the historical signifigance of this album and how it helped bring attention and an end to Apartied society in South Africa, Glegg & Savuka are more than just amazing musicians, they're real life heroes! Pro Reviews: Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World

  • All Music Guide

When South Africa was still suffering under the apartheid system in the 1980s, Johnny Clegg Savuka was the last thing apartheid supporters wanted in a pop group. Their lyrics were often vehemently anti-apartheid, and apartheid supporters hated the fact that a half-black, half-white outfit out of South Africa was integrated and proud of it. Released in the U.S. at the end of the 1980s, Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World is among the many rewarding albums the band has recorded. Sting and the Police are a definite influence on Clegg Savuka, who have absorbed everything from various African pop styles to Western pop, funk, rock, and reggae. The lyrics are consistently substantial and frequently sociopolitical -- "Bombs Away" addresses the violence of the apartheid regime, while "Warsaw 1943" reflects on the horrors Eastern Europe experienced at the hands of both communists and fascists during World War II. Clegg and company enjoyed a passionate following at the time, and this fine CD proves t...hat it was well deserved. - Alex Henderson, All Music Guide Read more Less
