Mary Steenburgen (MELVIN AND HOWARD) stars in this adaptation of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's classic novel about her experiences living in rural Florida during the 1920s and 1930s. Mixing together elements of both CROSS CREEK and THE YEARLING, director Martin Ritt creates a glowing period piece that finds the essence of both books. In the film, Mrs. Rawlings (Steenburgen), a New Yorker, buys an orange grove in the Florida swamps for the purpose of going there to write the gothic romance she can't seem to finish in the city. As soon as she arrives, Mrs. Rawlings becomes immersed in the colorful backwoods community that surrounds her grove, and acquires a young cook named Geechee (Woodard) as well as farm hands to work the groves. Enchanted by life in Cross Creek, Mrs. Rawlings finds herself writing not gothic romances, but tales of small town life in rural Florida. Next thing she knows, her stories catch the attention of a major publisher. A lyrical meditation on both rural life and the nature of creativity, Martin Ritt's film is filled with lush imagery and standout performances. In particular, Rip Torn's performance as Marsh Turner, a drunken but loving father, is outstanding, and it rightfully won him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

    I Love this Movie!

By Craig  Jun 20, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this Cross Creek (1983) review helpful

Yeah, I know it's not Kane or Casablanca, but there's just something about Cross Creek that I absolutely love. Rip Torn's performance tops the list. The introduction of Alfre Woodard (both Torn and Woodard were nominated for Oscars) as "Gitchee" is a... close second. Mary Steenburgen pulls off a wonderfully understated performance, and the naturalistic tone and pace of this movie slowly pulls you in until these characters seem to live and breathe, and their seemingly small crises (by Hollywood standards, anyway) have you rooting for their ultimate triumph. The whole theme of an artist finding her voice by learning to ignore convention and pull from experience and passion, is handled with such subtle dexterity that I think every writer or creative person could learn a thing or two from watching Cross Creek. Marjorie Kinnon Rawlings tries to vacate society and write victorian novels on her Florida orange grove, and eventually learns that its this new life she's chosen that provides the greatest inspiration, and thus "The Yearling" and "Jacob's Ladder" are born.Leanard Rosenman's score is wonderful, again in a very organic, understated way. The whole project came off as a labor of love, and I appreciated it 20 years ago and still do when I rewatch this movie today.Enjoy. Read more Less
