Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), a reporter for Newsday, travels Down Under to write a feature on Australia and its people. She gets a tip to visit a free-spirited bush ranger who was attacked by a crocodile, which he then killed with his bare hands. So Sue heads into the red sands and squalid swamps of Northern Territory outback to a tiny fly-blown burg called Walkabout Creek, where she is greeted by Wally (John Meillon) of Never-Never Safaris. Wally takes her to the pub to meet the infamous Michael J. "Crocodile" "Mick" Dundee (Paul Hogan), who charms her with his swagger and grit. He offers to lead her though the bush, as she's "just a Sheila," to where he was attacked. This comment raises her city-girl feminist hackles and she strikes out alone. But when Mick saves her from the grasp of a toothy reptile, she ducks under his wing and into his heart, and invites him to return with her to New York City. Here in the sophisticated urban jungles of Manhattan, the bushman has finally met his match, as he endures New York streets of the 1980s, filled with drug dealers, muggers, transvestites, and prostitutes. Sue finally gets more than just a story as the "wonder from down under" rocks the Big Apple to its core.

User Reviews: Crocodile Dundee (1986)

  • Overall:

    Dundee - charming, funny, aussie!!

    By SHIRLEE  Dec 13, 1999

If there was ever a film that made you feel good about being an Australian, this is it. Even ten years on it still ignites a fire in my belly and brings a tear to my eye. I truly believe that this film gets better every time you watch it!!The sensat...ionally friendly and good natured Mick Dundee (Hogan) does more for Australia's laid back "no worries" image than one million travellers could ever do. A man from the bush, a simple but well read man who has an incredible way with people and animals alike. Everyone he meets in the film, as well as all those who watch it, come away feeling as though they've had a real experince. No doubt it is Hogan's natural wit, flair and personality that bring Mick Dundee to life. The end of the film leaves you wanting to know more about the man, his new lady(Kozlowski) and their new life together. Will they stay and brave the long cold winters and intense atmosphere of New York, or will the happy couple move back to Walkabout Creek in Australia and enjoy the good life of the wandering bushman.Only time will tell I guess. But you can be sure tht this film will capture the attention of anyone who sees it no matter what their background. You see, it does not rely on Hollywood plots, stunts or camera tricks to win over the audience. It simply relies on the universally popular method of developing loveable, interesting and dynamic characters. Mick Dundee, obviously, but also Sue, Donk, Wally, Nev, Richard, Rosita and Danny the cab driver just to name a few. The only pity about this film is that if any of we Australians decided to head overseas ourselves we would surely struggle to win the locals over with the same ease and naivity that Mick does. But I guess then you could say that there is a lesson for all of us in the this film... if we are willing to listen.Simon L.
